As a new user please dont shout at me for starting a question thats probably already been done to death . I have a Birchwood 25 Interceptor that I am refittting and want to surrender to the taxes and change the Volvo Penta petrol engine to a diseasel . I have a Perkins 2 litre in an old LDV but I am not sure that this would be up to the job . Advice please . Also she has the name TREVERA , anyone know anything about her .

Send a PM or ask here to speak to solitaire, he's done this. But not with a perkins. I think the perky will be struggling. Also try posting on the PBO forum, lots of informative folks on there, with the knowledge!

What HP is your petrol engine. Is it on outdrives or shafts??

A few here have refitted diseasels from petrol. Trouble with fitting your van engine is the marinaisation!!

No one can force me to come here. I'm a volunteer!!.

No probs marinizing the LDV perky lump. Its a Perkins Prima. Would be better going for the Turbo'd version out on a Monetgo. Bit more Ummph in that one. The likes of ASAP will keep the parts on the shelf.
Being the Birchwood would have a Volvo outdrive it might be worth talking to Lancing as they do kits for engines to fit the drives. Depends on what the existing engine/drive is.

Engine suitability will really depend on where you want to use your boat. I would suspect that you are an inland waterways person from boat type and engine choice. thus suspect that the engine should be suitable. HERE is a similar boat with a BMC 1.5 diesel, but originally these boats were fitted with anything from Single inboard 80hp shaftdrive up to twin 145hp outdrives - so it is essential to know what you intend to do with the boat.

Welcome

If I remember correctly Martyn Whiteley who posts hereabout converted his twin engined Birchwood to single diesel. He didn't say much about it but I think he was quite happy with it. I am sure that if he reads this he may reply to you :)

Give Mike Bellamy a shout at http://www.lancingmarine.com.

They will have all the marinising bits, g/box, shafts etc that you will need for your engine.

Steve.

MBM FEB 04

I'm selling autographed copies of February 04's copy of MBM at next months LBS.

Having had a P25 with twin Perkins 4108's, I'd never recommend them as a retro-fit into such a boat, diesel or not. Far too noisy and slow. It would be just like spending 7 weeks and £2K refitting your kitchen with scrap units recovered from the local tip. OK so you save a few hundred on the unit(s), but all that time and effort fitting is wasted.

Should anybody need any reminders of my diesel swap then just ask............

I guess the concensus is a no to the LDV engine as I am intending to go coastal and hopefully cross to the continent , so if a no for this engine any other suggestions . New engine is the wifes wish so please don't side with her too much. After all , I still have to fit out with 'gadgets' , as she calls things like radar gps etc. She currently has an outdrive leg which I prefer but what engine size is havn't got a clue.
No the wife doesn't have the outdrive leg , the boat has

I'd go for the ford twin cam turbo'd Puma lump. I45 horses in more or less standard tune. Which will run all day if you wanted it to. Or a fair bit of potential to up the power. Though with all diesels its costs more to up than petrol.
Imarinized one. Nice engine easy to do and not that expensive. Well not until I blew the thing up, but thats another story!
