I'm in the process of selling our boat & buying another, 2nd hand, & would like to keep the name of our current boat.

Both boats are on the SSR & have boat radio licenses.

Is it possible to hang on to the name & if so, how would I go about it.

I wondered this as well. How about renaming your existing boat (using appriopriate rituals, of course). Then sell the renamed boat. Now you should be free to rename your new pride and joy. If you like the name, you presumably don't want your "old" boat to use it once she's with the new owner.

Tony,

It's not so much as not wanting the new owner to use the name, but it could cause confusion if they keep the boat in the same area.

I assume there is a way to change the name with the SSR.

You could change the name of the current boat and cancel the SSR or if you wish, renew SSR with new name. As already mentioned, there can be any number of boats on SSR with same name so no problem either way when registering the new boat. Boats of the same name in the marina can be a problem, but to a certain extent out of your hands. My father has a boat which had a unique name in the area but as boats come and go, there are now 3 with the same name. This is more complicated when on Part 1 register where names are unique, but no snags with SSR.
