Steel boat currently has copper-free eroding a/f as above.

It's flipping expensive and I need a lot of it.

After advice from other suppliers, am considering painting with Vinyguard and then (perhaps) a Jotun product.

Hull is soundly epoxied.


Opinions please oh gurus.

I have just done my boat with Vinyguard and Jotun Seaqueen. Went on well, suggested 2-3 years life. Not sure whether it will go on top of VC, but SML will advise. Seaqueen is OK on steel. Much more economic than others - less than half the price of international.

Seaqueen gets good reports here from others.

The International " antifouling compatibility chart" http://www.yachtpaint.com/LiteratureCentre/antifouling-compatibility-chart-gbr.pdf Suggests that VC Offshore requires no more than a light sanding a washing before being overcoated with other conventional antifoulings.

To be sure check the website of your chosen new antifouling for similar compatibility details

Vinyguard is used as an effective tie-coat, provided the old substrate is well sanded/scoured down and is securely stuck to the underlying gelcoat. Appropriate Jotun antifoul paints then bond chemically/securely with the Vinyguard.

One is advised to paint on both Vinyguard AND subsequent antifoul using 'swift, light strokes' in a thin coat, then thin overcoat(s).... as the SML people and/or Jotun's own yacht paint rep will advise.
