Changing a boat\'s name

Yes, I know its supposed to be unlucky, but the name of the boat I'm about to buy is unnaceptable to me.

Anybody know what's involved in making the change?

Re: Changing a boat\'s name

To avoid bad luck, walk round the boat seven times explaining why you are changing its name.
As far as paperwork goes, depends whether you are Part 1, SSR or not. Even Part 1 is fairly straightforward, as I recall.

Re: Changing a boat\'s name

Part 1 is very straightforward.... forms can be downloaded, and then just sent in the post.... its not cheap though! (£180 from memory)

Part III (SSR) is even easier... can be done on-line, including a name change.... for not a great deal of money... (£30 from memory)

go here for details

Go on...

Re: Changing a boat\'s name

Ceremony needed, or King Neptune will bite your arse!

You need to recruit a dignitary (not a crewmember) to say the words; 'I name this yacht etc.'

Be generous with the alcohol - on the deck NOT your gullet! That can be done afterwards.

Happy sailing /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: Changing a boat\'s name

Its not unlucky! We changed our boat name on purchase and promptly:
-settled down on the bottom overnight at anchor (fin keel);
-misjudged a turn and glanced the end of a finger berth;and
-had to take a knife to a mooring line to save embarassment in a lock.
None of which ever happened to us in 30yrs of sailing, but hey, I put that down getting a yachtmaster's ticket, not name changing (we did walk around the boat chanting though)

Re: Changing a boat\'s name

My goodness! What a load of tosh that ceremony is!.

I can just imagine the chairman of P&O going through that lot with the latest addition to the fleet..... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Modern commercial shipping changed names almost as often as the weather - well at least every time it changes owners or lessors.

I have always changed the name of any boat I have acquired - sort of personalises it to me.

If you MUST have a ceremony, how about this one: stand in the bows upwind of your admiring crew/ family and friends, fart into the wind three times. stand on your head and pronounce the new name backwards 3 times in the highest falsetto squeak you can. You'll probably end up a guest of the NHS, but it will mean about the same.

It will also ensure that unwanted guests do not turn up at inopportune moments later on...... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

That's the risky ceremony. Just to be really sure you need to swing magic crystals 3 times around each winch and piss on the cockpit floor. I've also heard that the 3 farts should be ignited, but am not absolutely sure about that.

Good grief. We live in the 21st century now. Superstition is what made people build houses with round chimneys up here. So the evil spirits couldn't hide there.

Idiots! Everybody knows that chimneys should be square because Santa can climb down them easier! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: Changing a boat\'s name

It's unlucky if you have a wooden boat with the name carved into the transom - changing it would involve cutting it out so weakening the structure. Most of us don't have that issue these days! I reckoned it was unlucky to have a boat seemingly named after a Japanese car only sold in Asia, after googling it, so I changed it (Part 1 registered, no probs).

4000 miles later and I've only hit the bottom once, at that was a couple of weeks ago!

Those of us who made a career of manning these ships often wonder how wise that was!!??
