The sole of my sailboat is carpet but I want to change it to hardwood. What do I do to install if I can, do I glue it down or use resin or epoxy?
Thanks for any help.

Hi and welcome to the forum. I used sikaflex to both stick down and fill the gaps in 1/4" Canadian Oak strips. It has been down 10 years now and is still rock solid. Epoxy will probably do it just as well but will be far more difficult to get up should you ever want/need to replace a damaged bit etc.

This is how I did mine

I think you are getting the idea of all this fancy woodwork stuff :) Lovely work.

PS Can I borrow that beam press please ?

Spiffing, but if you could possibly make it quickly removable - even if just ' quickly removable with a big screwdriver by a frightened bloke ' that might be a boon if you ever get a nasty hole in the bilge courtesy of a container or something, difference between sailing to the nearest pub for a much needed swiftie afterwards, or swimming / directing the lifeboat there...

What is under the carpet? You probably already have a wooden sole and what you need to do depends on what state it is in.

It is fiberglass under the carpet I wish it was wood that would make things much easier. The boat is a small sailboat, Grampion 23.

smotzy,

maybe some big inspection hatches in the grp sole might be an idea then, before laying on any finish you feel like as long as it's easily removable ?

I'm counselling perfection here, as my boat's cabin soles have small inspection hatches but would otherwise require my being frightened with a big screwdriver and or an axe, both of which are kept handy but it would be unfortunate if I dug too deep in the shallow bilges ! :)
