I'm in the process of buying a second-hand yacht which is Simrad RD68 DSC vhf radio which will have been pre-programmed with the previous owner's details. Could anyone please tell me what I need to do when I take over the yacht, I'm also intending to change her name. I believe the MSSI number is known and available.

Sorry if this has been covered in previous posts - I've done a search but failed to find precisely what I need.

Regarding the VHF, if it has an MMSI it should stay with the boat and if you look up OFCOM, you can follow through the routine for re registering with your new boat name and details. Re SSR, what I have always done is , for better or worse, just register in my name. No charge for VHF licence and £25 for SSR.

as far as I can gather (I've got the same issues) its easier to take it over in the current name and then change the name. can be done on line with ssr, need to change insurance as well which is easy. the rd68 needs the memories clearing (read the manual) but you cant change the MMSI youself. but that doesnt matter since the MMSI goes with the boat.

dont forget the renaming ceremony, champagne to neptune etc or you will have bad luck. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
