Using the search facility I have come across posts which indicate that the MMSI number stays with the old boat, yet I have spoken with a Simrad agent (there is a Simrad on the new boat), who told me to bring my VHF license (or a photocopy - just to make absolutely sure the number is correct), and they will programme my number into the new radio, ie the number stays with me.

The Ofcom website isn't very helpful.

Who is right /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif ???

The MMSI number belongs to the ship's radio licence not your Short Range Certificate. If the ship already has an MMSI number and callsign what you need to do is get the ship's licence changed to your name or just apply for a new one. If you do the latter you will need to have the radio reprogrammed.

I've just been through this recently. When I called Ofcom I was told that I had to cancel my existing licence and apply for a new one. I did this online and was issued with a new MMSI number which I programmed into the radio on the new boat. Give them a call if you want confirmation

Not only the site is unhelpfull but some of the folk working there don t know the procedures....

The number like all other official numbers belongs to the boat...Your new boats number is now yours if it has one..If it doesn t have oen then you have to apply for a new one for the new boat. If it has one and the owner hasn t walked off with the VHF then it is possibly already programed.

When we purchased our boat we were given conflicting advice by OFCOM on this. In the end just did it electronically and we did end up keeping the existing MMSI number for the boat - glad as did not want to go to the trouble of reprogramming it

I talked to OFCOM recently Re.my new boat /radio and old MSSi number from previous boat - I was told to keep my existing number for the new radio as I have transfered my former ships name to new boat . (Owner of my previous boat changed the name)
Aware this might cause some confusion but seems to make sense.

I don't know why this subject keeps coming up again and again.

Probably because the seller of the boat cancels everything.

The Call sign and the MMSI number belong to the boat and have always and should always stay with the boat.

When you sell you boat you shouldn't (unless Ofcom has completely messed up) need to do anything regarding the ship's licence. It's now free, so there is no annual fee. The purchaser of the boat is the only one who needs to inform Ofcom of the change in ownership and address details, thus taking over the licence.

If you want to change the name of the vessel, then I would suggest that you first take over the licence, without complicating the procedure with the change of name, then a month later instigate the change of name.
