Had the man around to view existing system; teleflex (or a version of it). Have been informed its old and knackered, parts no longer available blah blah. I am therefore looking for an hydraulic system. Boat is very similar to Hans Christian 41 apart from mine is steel, approx 14-16t, 120sq m sail area, long keel, centre cockpit wheel steering. Your advice is appreciated. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

If you want to stay with the old, I had no difficulty replacing 25-year old Teleflex recently.
PM me for details.

Shop around. Apart from Vetus there are Wagner and several other manufacturers.
Ideally stick to a stainless cylinder. Avoid aluminium ones.
ASAP have Wagner and Vetus bits. You need to first of all decide on an actuating cylinder. Tha stroke needs to be sufficient to take you to full port and starbd with the chosen tiller arm. Make sure you have space for it and decide how it will be mounted. The hull mount needs to be strong and either bolted or welded in place Then look at the displaced capacity of oil lock to lock. The delivery pump on the wheel needs to be chosen carefully. The displacement of the cylinder divided by the wheel pump for a full rotation will give you number of turns lock to lock. Check what you have now and decide what you want. The plumbing should be straightforward if you are used to DIY.

your boat seems fairly big to have teleflex even with the older 12 " stroke unless your system is a twin cable system

speak to wagner and dont buy from anyone that does not ask you for rudder sizes

Correct, tis older 2 cable system, or 1 cable and 2 ends on a push me pull me arrangement. Not positive is morse as cannot find part no either on cable or helm. Had a look around on web, Aquafax appear to have what I'm after, Vetus site gave me a headache.

I quote from WOABB -

work was carried out by Seafit marine at Falmouth Marina - 01326 313713 - who also supplied the cables and fittings. This work was carried out in 2003 and the price was £240.00 for labour and £380.00 for parts. I would think that this work would be possible for anyone handy at DIY, and had a few tools, but as I have one paralyzed hand it was a little beyond me, and I hate starting a job that I cannot finish, and then have to send for the professionals.

Another from Westerly had his cables made up by Speedy Cables of Swansea for £394 for the two including VAT and shipping. They need the old cables (inner and outer) as pattern. If you cannot find them, let me know and I will go back to the Westerly "poster".

If you can get speedy cables (01639 732213) to make you a set you would be best to send the whole set to them also you want to check the cable wheel for wear
I think that that the old d260 system is what your set up was based on
the fact that it works pull pull allows much higher strains than push pull
