I'm looking to purchase an EV100 tillerpilot in the near future and I'm thinking it may be wise to wait for some sort of offer to come round (if they do) as it's quite a big purchase for me and I'm not in a rush. I missed the SIBS so I'm not sure if anyone was doing a deal there on them?

Not really paying much attention in the past do any other thrifty sailors out there know if many places doing deals around Black Friday (I know retaillers try to shift slow stock on BF so may not be included), or Christmas/NY? Various places (not boaty) send me 10% offers now and then which would make a huge difference on a £1300 tillerpilot!

I always think it's a bit cheeky asking for discount on something that must be an easy sale so would much rather wait for an offer but I'm not in the position to spend more money then I really have to and living in the middle of the country I have no affiliation to a particular shop.

Cheers

Everyone feels a bit that way; might be worth developing a polite way to say something like:

“I kinda like xyz and have heard good things about your store. Just wondering if you could sort something out/(come closer to £xxx).....”

Markup can vary quite a bit, so not always possible. I often get 10-20% discounts on electronics as do many others. And if you can bulk-up an order, or become a regular customer so much the better.

And don’t feel bad, customers with cash in their pockets are well worth a little deal !

When I wanted a Raymarine EV100 tiller, I asked for suppliers outside the UK on this forum. At the time I found a chandler in Sweden was cheapest, but is not today. Do not worry about the guarantee if you buy abroad as it is world wide and covers buying in one country fitting in another and claiming in yet another.

As a general comment all Raymarine stock is held in Belgium, so the poor exchange rate to the Euro may be adding to the higher cost. When I bought in 2015 the Recommended Retail Price was £1500 and generally discounted to £1250. I ordered from Sweden and with shipping cost £980 (no need to worry about VAT as until Brexit, nothing was needed to be paid). A few weeks later the UK price was reduced during the Southampton Boat Show to £1100.

It could also be worth asking the local electronic installer for a price, you may get a keen price.

Hope this helps.

I bought an EV-200 system last spring. At that time Raymarine offered a 5% cashback if you went to one of the open days they had in lue of the london boat show. There was also a winter fitting allowance that apparently Raymarine do most years. I did find that some dealers could offer some creative pricing using the allowance.

There is no reason, at all, to think it cheeky to ask if there are any discounts - in fact its stupid not to ask. If they don't offer discounts - walk out of the door - there is usually more than one chandler within striking distance - at worst - you have to pay the price. In fact - walking out of the door might even encourage a discount - they do want business, they do need turnover - and you can, as you say, wait.

The fact they give discounts, Black Friday - or whatever simply illustrates they have plenty of margin in there.

But its your money - if pride stands in the way of getting a bargain it simply leaves more room for the rest of us :)

Thanks all, by chance I had an offer email come through from Cactus for some other bits the other day but will keep an eye for other generic "x% off this weekend" ones. To be honest I'm not against asking but I work in retail and know fast moving stuff rarely gets discounted and a seasonal offer may be the best way of achieving it. I'm quite happy to spend a bit extra and but it from a UK chandlery, like I say I work in retail and have seen how cheap imports have killed the "highstreet".

I'm pretty sure I'm going to sell my old motorbike to free up some cash so I may look at getting a few items (fridge, vhf, LED tri light an dmaybe even an I70 wind/depth/log pack) and asking for a deal in house but again I'm in no rush so I'll wait till the new year and save some more cash.

Cheers all... but if you do see a 10% weekend offer code from the "usual suspects" give me a shout!
