I have a friend who travels often to central London from overseas and is looking for the largest Chandler within easy reach. Needs to buy spare rigging, blocks, ropes etc. for his 19 foot sail boat. He wants to physically look at the stuff and get some advice so does not want to shop on-line. Any recommendations very thankful

An mariner's oasis in the frantic madness of the London retail scene. One would not be at all surprised to find Carruthers at the counter buying a coil of best manilla for the Dulcibella!

Is that where he bought his parafin stove and bronze rigging screws. BTW it was Jones that owned Dulcibella - I've just finished re-reading the novel.

Ocean Leisure, under Charing Cross Station. Stanfords in Long Acre WC2 is best for charts and pilots, and you can sit on a leather sofa and peruse them with no obligation. Jerry.

I can't think of any large chandlers near to central London. Although may years ago I bought an anchor at Arthur Beales

"Within easy reach" might have to mean within walking distance or a short taxi ride of a railway station with a direct service to London!

For a 19foot boat ( like mine :( ) it does not seem worth the effort. Different perhaps if fitting out a big yacht for ocean cruising.

I mostly use Seateach in Emsworth or Force4's Chichester branch

Seateach is only a short dive from where I keep the boat but it is right next to Emsworth station. There's a direct train service to Victoria or via Havant to Waterloo but is about 1½ to1¾ hours by either route.

Force4 is about a mile from Chichester station but the journey time from London is about 1½ hours.

Marine Superstore at Port Solent is not near a station AFAIK

Some of the other branches of Force 4, may be near a station. About ½ mile at Lymington but I dont think there is a direct train service so the journey time will be nearly 2 hours.
