Chainplates

It is considered to be bad practice in boatyards to leave a wooden hull standing on "legs" secured to the chainplates, if ashore over winter, as the ground may settle under the keel, leaving the boat hanging from her chainplates.

This does not apply to legging a boat on a beach, as the Cornish do, as the beach won't settle or if it does all of it does.

Of course, we are talking about the boat hanging from her chainplates for several months, in this case.

Actually, trying to visualise my boat hanging from her chainplates, off a crane, I can see that it would not work.

The centre of gravity is well aft of the chainplates.

I guess that's a good excuse not to try! (However, a lot of boats have backstays (and forestays) which could be used to counteract the C. of G.)

It would be a good test though wouldn't it?

(Of course, such an exercise might weaken the attachments and then the next time out in a violent force 3, you could lose the mast).

No I wouldn,t have the courage to do it especially if I was to lie under the hull to paint it etc. however as a boat gets thrown over on it's beam ends often with all the force being on the chain plates they would be pretty poor chain plates if they wouldn't happily take the strain. If you wanted to spray paint the under hull for instance it would be advantageous to be able to hoist it up by the chain plates and backstay attachment. I guess after it had been hanging for a while and you had jumped about on the deck you would feel confident enough to get under it. I would suggest lift it just clear of the water or cradle for a time and listen for any complaints. After all a torn out chain plate can be repaired and if it happens better in the yard than at sea. I think also that smaller bioats are likely to be inherently stronger in relation to the weight so it might not be a problem for a trailer sailer but don't do it on a 50 ton Ketch. regards olewill
No I doubt that the chain plates would be weakened without any sign of damage. regards olewill
