Chain sizing

Diameter of the rod that the chain links are made from.

I once thought I had scored an unbelievable deal on chain advertised as 1"...

Yes, it's the size of the material the links are made from. Also true about calibrated chain. Calibrated chain guarantees that each link conforms to the nominal dimensions so as it will literally fit the gypsy - however, there are several different standards that short link chain is made to, so you need to see what gypsies are available for your windlass, matching which standards, and then source chain to suit.

Diameter of the link

To be specific it's the diameter of the wire the link is made from.

But the OP should be aware that chain for a windlass gypsy needs to be "calibrated" to have a chance of fitting and even so the only way to be sure is to send the gypsy to the chain manufacturer or to send a sample of chain to the gypsy manufacturer for them to test compatibility...

[ What does it mean when a chain is 10mm as I need to determine whether anchor gypsy is the right size.]

You have to be very careful when buying 10 mm chain. There are two standards, ISO and DIN. For every size except 10 mm the dimensions are the same. For 10 mm the link lengths are 2 mm different and need a different gypsy.

There are two different link LENGTHS available in 10mm chain. 30mm and 28mm.

The shorter of the two at 28mm is so close to 3/8 BBB that it fits fine on some gypsies. Take your old one in and be your own judge.

I am currently using 10mm 28mm chain on a Lofrans Tigres 3/8 BBB gypsy with no problems.
