I am having trouble with new anchor chain for my Leroy Somer windlass fitted 2000. Tried 10mm galvanised which on first looking appeared okay but in operation the chain snatches and jams on retrieval. Chandlery agrees with me that chain is a tad too small but 12mm too large. I have heard tales of these windlasses causing problems and now it's my turn.
Also chandlery making enquiries as to whether replacing gypsy might be a better bet but struggling to source info or parts.
Any ideas or suggestions please?

10mm chain is made to 2 standards which are not interchangeable. Almost certainly your windlass will need chain to DIN rather than the US standard.

10mm metric chain comes in 2 standards, ISO and DIN. Go to Vyv Cox' website all the details are there along with other essential reading for anyone buying new chain.

ISO and DIN vary by 2mm in length of link. If your chandler does not stock both sizes nor know the difference go to another chandler.

Gypsies are marked but you may need to take the gypsy off to find the marks. Some gypsies are only marked with a code and you will need the cross reference to know what is what. But you should take it off anyway. Take a few links off the old chain, take your complete gypsy and go to the chandler and match the new chain to the old and then wrap the new chain round the gypsy - it will be very obvious if it fits does not fit.

All windlass take a range of gypsies and you should be able to buy a new one. But it will need be a LS gypsy as shaft dimensions vary.
