Chain Ferry

They confuse every one. I think the chains drop quite quick though. Just dont pass to close. To the back that is. Not the front.

Walk carfully on, stand at the side whilst cars come on. As it approaches the other side get ready in preparation for the gate to be opened to stride smartly off. Stride smartly off evading cars and grannies weilding pushchairs. Hope that helps

I was told that the ferry should give way to us boaters - never tested the theory to extreme but have noticed that the driver does seem to wait for me to pass.

Or perhaps he is just intimidated by me....

According to the Almanac the Cowes chain ferry should give way to all boats. If you do pass it when it is moving always pass behind as the chains at the back will drop away fairly sharp. Remember the chains at the front are tight and therefore will be closer to the surface. (The boat pulls itself across on the chains.)

Theres a flashing light and it moves - don't put the "give way" rule to the test - you'll lose! Give at least 30 feet behind the thing.

I've never had any problem at all with the Chain Ferry - I always let it go if it's about to leave, then pass it at the back giving good clearance in case of any chain dragging. (We Intend lunching at the Folly Saturday if the weather's OK)

You can to soem extent see if cars are unloading or driving on, I use it as a good guide as to how long I've got, like any other situation, proceed with caution.
