Chaff in rocket flares for collision avoidance - any history?

Hmmm, interesting stuff so far... I'm pretty certain the whole thing is a non-starter, and although it appears it has been tried, it hasn't worked. No surprise there. I'll also say, in response to webcraft, that although I do routinely converse with other vessels on Channel 16 about de-confliction, I am extremely careful in my choice of words, as radio-arranged collisions are all too commonplace.

My own prefered solution is never needing a big ship to know I'm there, by staying very very well out of the way (other than in certain limited circumstances).

Wasn't it on this forum someone wrote about some boating mag testing radar reflectors and stating the best one was a sixpack of old crunched beer cans in a plastic bag hoisted up the mast? Could have been a Swedish mag as well though I am not sure. It was a serious thing though, no april fool ploy or the like...

Now there's a great idea!
There's always a big black bin liner full of empty crushed beer cans by the end of every trip..... so I can just see it now:
SWMBO: Do you realise that we haven't even cast off yet and you're on your 4th can of beer!

The idea of Chaff is to give a larger radar return than the intended target, the idea normally is to deploy Chaff then alter course so that missiles etc. are confused and miss the target because they home in on the Chaff.
It is not a Stealth material which would absorb the radar signal and give no return.
