Re: CG66 - can I tell \'em where I\'m going online?
They are not that interested and are unlikely to launch a search for you if you don't tell them that you have arrived - too many people on the water these days and not enough coastguards if everyone was to do it. The general advice is for you to tell a third party of your plans and then for them to contact the coastguard if you are overdue.
Re: CG66 - can I tell \'em where I\'m going online?
The pack they sent me included a couple of postcards on which to put your info - boat name (and I added SSR and callsign) and phone no of your local coastguard area. Give the card to your contact with instructions eg if I haven't rung you by midnight then alert the coastguard.
Re: CG66 - can I tell \'em where I\'m going online?
the coastguard would not do anything unless your shore contact contacted them to say you were overdue. even then they would only put a call out for information on the overdue yacht XXXXXX. They would not start search and rescue just cos you failed to report in at the other end.
Re: CG66 - can I tell \'em where I\'m going online?
The CG definitely now do NOT want you telling them you are going from A to B. They started this system years ago, and it got out of hand - far too much work and no benefit.
They suggest you tell trusted friend ashore where you are going, your ETA, and to call the CG if you are more than XX hours/days/weeks late in calling them (friend) to say you have arrived. Even then they admit that most overdue reports they get via this route are of those who have arrived safely at B, tired/wet/thirsty and gone to the pub instead of making the phone call.
Re: CG66 - can I tell \'em where I\'m going online?
That is most definitely incorrect - the CG66 system and transit reports are most definitely encouraged. A call on ch16 requesting a working channel for routine traffic, then passing your departure, destination, persons on board and where your CG66 is held or a brief description if you don't have a CG66 is recommended.
