Struck by a plea in the RYA magazine (why do I bother ?) about completing your CG66. And the concomitant to that is that you should report your plans to the CG. I have only once in recent years heard a polite response to the reporting of a passaage plan - and this was a chap leaving Devon for Coruna. Most of the plans reported seem to be Dartmouth to Brixham eta 1 hour.

We have no-one to be upset if we're late for tea and have never registered or reported.

Do you - or not - and if so why ? (now will this stir up life on SB ?)

guess it course's for horse's....up here north of the border Clyde Coastguard always respond in a cheery and polite way. Having spent 15 years wuth the RNLI I am fully aware of the importance of good radio communications. Sailing single-handed as I always do I always advise them of my departure and intended destination and of any change I make en-route. sailing mainly in auto pilot mode should I take a dive overboard and the yacht sails on up the shore 10 miles on they will at least have a good starting datum to start a search for a body!!

No

Never have bothered.

The scheme made some sort of sense when few people had radio aboard. Now, I'm sure the CG have better things to do with their time.

But some people love this sort of stuff. Propbably the same people who ask for readio checks.

Don't understand the connection between CG66 and the need to give a passage plan. I have always had an in-date CG66 but very rarely pass a passage plan to the CG.

In years gone by I always left a TR when sailing a significant distance with just me and my young kids on board, my thinking was that if I went overboard they would need all the help they could get. These days I worry how I would manage if they went overboard.

Re: No

Don't really see the point of reporting plans to CG as I'm sure they have better things to do. But registered for CG66 as it seemed a quick 'n' easy way to get contact details available in the event of disaster. I would guess that if they only get a few seconds of a garbled mayday at least they can search their CG66 database for a few possible matches on boat type or location etc, then ring the skippers to see if they are tucked-up in bed...

Would be interested to hear from anyone that has used the CG66 thing in 'anger' etc...

Re: No

I have done when crossing the channel; got a polite response. I will do when singlehanding next week; otherwise I won't bother. I don't do 'radio checks'- if I'm going away for a week or more a call to the Marina saying my berth will be free does the job.
BTW if you are going to do the CG66 thing it's very important to remember to phone your shore contact when you arrive- I forgot once and my ex-husband was just about to report me missing-whoops!

Re: CG66 details

I have a CG66 on file with Clyde Coastguard (lovely people as Starboard says) but have not yet felt the need to notify a passage. To wander slightly OT, I have just been on to the MCA site to review my CG66 details (prompted by this thread, thanks) and found my form to be blank apart from the Vessel Name field. I've emailed to enquire and await a reply.

Have you checked recently?

i keep my CG66 up to date and report all 'long' passages. as far as i'm concerned it's so that if we go missing they will know where to start the search and what to look for.

i won't bother if i'm coast-hopping but anything over about 50 miles. i always make a point of calling in to report arrival if it's a UK destination and if i'm passing through several CG areas i'll call up one or two of them as i pass.

i have never reported trivial passages and never received anything but courtesy.

i'm always mindful of a mike peyton cartoon showing a nerdy type "solent coastguard, yacht skylark, reporting a passage from berth E3 to the fuel dock"

One of, if not the most time and resource consuming types of incident that HMCG deal with are overdue vessels. The main point about leaving a TR or passage plan is that if you are reported overdue then they have a starting/finishing point with ETD/ETA to commence searching. Ask a CG why they like to receive TR's, it makes their task a lot easier in these situations.

Who is going to report you overdue and if someone did report you overdue surley it would be easy for them to give the CG your eta and etd.
For that matter if they did not know your eta or etd how would they know you are overdue (whoever reports you overdue).

I keep my CG66 updated and notify 50+ mile passages. The CG are always polite, but I'm not sure anything gets done with any of this information except filing for possible future reference.

no, nothing gets done with the information until you are reported missing. certainly they won't send out a search party if you fail to report arrival.

I can't see the point of filling in a CG66 if you're never going to file a passage plan.

what is the longest passage you do and do you tell anyone where you are going or when you are expected? if you were run down and had to take to a raft without time to send a mayday, do you have any way of initiating a search?

I have filled in my CG66 and I always file a passage plan for any extended trips (over 5-6 hours). On one occasion the CG called me up mid passage and asked for my current position as they had a report of a possible casualty near my path. Unfortunately I had passed that position a few hours ago (was making better progress than expected) and so was unable to assist.

Just shows that filing your passage plan works both ways.
