CG \'RIB\'- Dangerous Lack of Consideration

Last Friday 12th, 1405 hrs, whilst approaching Portsmouth, off Browndown Camp, in a school boat, we passed a small 10' dinghy at anchor, in which 2 guys were happily fishing.

No anchor ball displayed of course, but we were then treated to the spectacle of a large CoastGuard 'RIB' tearing past towards Southampton, within a few yards just inshore of the dinghy, which was then hit by a massive wash, almost throwing these guys into the water.

Hardly driven with any 'care or consideration' for other boats & a disgraceful exhibition for us to witness.

There are many "Proffessionals" who dont deserve the title seaman.I was anchoured when a fast ferry passed, toofast. The ferry dug such a whole in the sea my 40 foot boat literally fell into it,luckily no one was injuredas I had called out seconds before! The next time it passed it was at a much reduced speed.

Re: CG \'RIB\'- Dangerous Lack of Consideration

Was the incident reported to the Coastguard - it certainly needed to be.

Re: CG \'RIB\'- Dangerous Lack of Consideration

Bit of a contradiction.
To create a " massive wash" they would have had to be still at displacement speed, which means they couldn't have been " tearing out"

[/ QUOTE ]Not quite......I have been driving a Redbay "Stormforce 11 RIB"for "Kintyre Express" recently and I can assure you at 30kts the stern wash left behind would be capable off swamping many a small dinghy....it does not take too much common sense to ensure this wash is not a problem to other boaters around.A little thought and respect for others is all that is needed.

Re: CG \'RIB\'- Dangerous Lack of Consideration

That's possibly the case for many motor cruisers as well, where the wash could be capable of swamping a very small dinghy, that's not quite the same as a "massive wash", although would agree a bit of common sense would always help.

Unfortunately it's the start of the main Solent boating season, so we can look forward to many more of this type of post on SB over the next couple of months /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Re: CG \'RIB\'- Dangerous Lack of Consideration

Here's one from last evening: I'm on a straight line at 10 knots SOG between Cowes Roads and the Dolphin Pasage when a car ferry comes out through the Outer Swash - ah, that means t'other has left Fishbourne. It has and graduially overtakes from the starb'd quarter as I pass Gilkicker. Before I get near Spit Sand Fort it is very close and very big and seemingly determined to continue diagonally across my path. Either he hasn't seen me or doesn't care!
What would you have done?
Answers on a postcard please.
Hint 1: the captain of the St Cecila has a score to settle . . .
Hint 2: I was early on the tide . . .

Re: CG \'RIB\'- Dangerous Lack of Consideration

Errm, I'd have kept well out of the way of all commercial traffic within the Dockyard of Portsmouth ?

Re: CG \'RIB\'- Dangerous Lack of Consideration

BUT the Dockyard Port of Portsmouth extends from near the Nab to around Lee-on-the-Solent.
So how would YOU have dealt with that professional ferryman?

Re: CG \'RIB\'- Dangerous Lack of Consideration

What a [--word removed--], how incosiderate. Just think, that ferry draws so mush less depth and is vastly more manouverable than you. I can't beleive you didnt stand your ground and demand he alters course to go round you leaving a goodly didtance so that the wash from his few hundred tonnes of displacement doesn't spill your frey bentons dinner.

Re: CG \'RIB\'- Dangerous Lack of Consideration

Sorry BUT 10 knots SOG might suggest summat about my draft (draught?), manoevrability too. And I didn't find having a large ferry (everything looks bigger at night Bishop) trying to squeeze me out of the way at all condusive to holding the tin-opener onto a Fray Bentos tin.
Don't forget that this was a grudge match . . .

It merely says that your boat was doing 10 knots SOG.

He probably does, they are shallow draught and have a prop on each corner. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: CG \'RIB\'- Dangerous Lack of Consideration

Hmm one wonders about Wightlink at the best of times - bandits/con artists/etc spring to mind regarding their charges but all the boat crews I have met/spoken with have come across as professional...

As for the CG rib - assuming its the Osprey its not the first incident of this type I ve heard of.

Worth remembering though that the MCA and the GC actually share it.

Re: CG \'RIB\'- Dangerous Lack of Consideration

From:

The Dockyard Port of Portsmouth Order 2005

"Small Boats in the Harbour

7. Power-driven small boats and all cross harbour ferries shall, when inside the Harbour, keep out of the way of all seagoing vessels, Isle of Wight car and passenger ferries and tugs conducting towing operations."

Re: CG \'RIB\'- Dangerous Lack of Consideration

The Harbour ends at a line between Fort Blockhouse and the Round Tower, quite different to the Dockyard Limits (see earlier). This contretemps occurred over a mile to seaward. So what to do?
