I'm off shopping tomorrow, and thought I'd get a new centreplate bolt having been in two minds whether to knock it out or not. Probably best to do it now while it's out of the water and I can chock up the plate. So..

..what metal? The old one looks like plain steel, but doesn't seem very rusty. I don't think it's stainless. I presume the plate is steel. Surely the bolt must be stainless? Or is it not so hard as plain steel? Or is stainless ineffective anyway when most of it is jammed into wood without oxygen?

Lots of questions, sorry! One answer will do!!

I replaced the centreplate bolt last year with a similar mild steel bolt that I took out on the grounds that as it had been in there for some years, and there was very little wear, then it must be made of the right stuff.

I have been strongly advised never to use stainless steel below the water line.
