Anyone had the joy of removing and replacing a centaur window with the type of success you would pass on to someone else (its leaking cos a chain plate had pulled the area above it out of line)
A back issue of the WOA bi-annual magazine has an article on this. I can find out which one if you like... suggest you ask in the WOA Yahoo group and/or the WOA web forum.
Leaking windows is a common problem in Centaurs... and you've obviously also got the other well-known issue in slightly older Centaurs of the shroud pulling at the cabin roof. Newer models have the window or shroud moved because of this (not sure which).
We took the windows, of the same design AFAIK, out of Berwick because they were leaking. It was the joint between the frame and the superstructure that needed resealing. We did that OK but did not attempt to dismantle the window itself.
No problems but obviously need one person inside and one person outside. Quite a few of the interscrews were not really serviceable so we replaced many. They are an uncommon size , smaller than used on more recent boats and possibly not very easy to get. We got them from Trafalgar Yacht services I think, but they may be available from the likes of Sea Screw and A2A4. (M3.5 or something IIRC)
We used Sikaflex as the new sealant (that's the ordinary adhesive sealant 290?, 291?) but being an adhesive it will make them difficult to get out for the next person.
If you have to service the window units themselves it might be worth sending them away for professional attention but the sealing strip may be available from somewhere like Seals+Direct.
We did three of the four in the main cabin (Never did get round to the fourth)
Have a look at 'earlybird's' post on the 'New Hatch' thread below. They used CJ International and I can personally recommend then very highly indeed.
I used them for the complete replacement windows on my Fulmar a couple of years ago, and they were able to supply everything needed for the job at a very reasonable price. Lovely people to deal with too.
Don't have their phone number to hand, but talk to Jan (the 'J' in the husband and wife team that own the company) and she'll provide all the advice/help you need.
Her husband used to run the company that provided all the windows for Westerly until their demise, so they have all the jigs, extrusions, seals etc etc.
No connection etc except as an extremely happy customer! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
I don't have the leaky window problem but my chain plates need replacement. So, I'm taking the opportunity to do the modification that stregnthens the area.
PM me if you need details.
Since I need to replace the chain plates, I looked at getting some long ones made that would go over the window outside. But the distance from the bottom of the window frame to the deck isn't very large so I decided to put a strengthener inside as many have done. This is an I shaped stainless tie bar that bolts on to the chain plate bolts & then bolts below the window. The bolts go into the locker. To make the thing nicer to look at , some people have added a wooden grab handle.
