Another thread here questions the reliability of diesel engines but I thought it would be useful to try and analyse the reasons behind routine breakdowns.
If you have suffered an engine failure please enter the poll. You can select multiple answers.

The question is:
If you have suffered an engine breakdown what subsequently proved to be the primary reason behind it?

Interesting.......160 views but only 44 recorded poll votes so far. Does this indicate a hidden statistic that only 25% of those viewing have actually suffered an engine breakdown?
Two highest reasons given so far.....fuel system problems followed by cooling circuit.

Would 25% of people suffering a breakdown be on the high side?

I hope I never do: being on an Atlantic coast, single engine, 3,000 mile fetch for wind and swell.

Am I asking for trouble saying that? Like saying I haven't had a puncture in my car for 5 years and going out the following morning to find a tyre flat?

Dont think most folk go far enough away from port, to actually get serious breakdowns. Hardly ever heard of a diesel engine ever breaking down as such. Lack of fuel, yes, or [oh really!] in the water supply. But never the engine.
