caught speeding, what happens next

You are probably right, having spent some time sat on an outside pontoon at Saxon on Saturday being knocked about by the ribs and power boats from upriver I hate inappropriate wash as much as anyone.

The point about the speed limit vs wash is a good one. Some boats at 6 knots create an awful wash. If they knock back just a tad they would be much more sociable.

At sea one expects waves. In harbour or on a flat calm day, one doesn't.

I don't tend to work up a mast, service an engine, or generally fiddle around doing jobs that require a steady hand when I'm out sailing in a F6-8 /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I save that for my time in harbour when it's nice and flat...or should be.

Seriously though I see both sides of the fence on this one, a lot of mobo owners will give yachts some searoom (and therefore warning of the wash) and when I'm playing mobos I do the same, even in the Solent.

On the water there are some moboers that don't pay attention to where that are going, or to the boat they are about to pass, and even if someone is working on deck and will then change course at the last minute to pass even closer at 20 odd knots 10ft away. I wish I was exaggerating.

If raggies have prior warning to wash it isn't a problem. If some numpty (not implying anyone on here is btw) changes course and buzzes you with a few metres to spare, it isn't.

really seriosly in response to DAKAs original point, once out of the harbour mouth, traffic permitting, I open up. I had no idea the limit extended so far.

Ok, you're joking, but I have been buzzed like that in the Conway River channel where I am working on the cabin roof getting my sails down. Imagine doing foredeck work at anchor when someone did that to you? Or SWMBO with a kettle of hot water trying to make a hot drink for a cold & wet crew as we arrive in the harbour - it has happened & very lucky to not get badly scalded. I know most on here are pretty considerate- if teasers, But just use your eyes & brains MoBo'ers please.

Well, I'm hoping that, once I've had me bum scrubbed the week after next, I'll be able to go over 10 knots....
 
i know - you do foredeck work in a mobo, make tea in a mobo and get in and out of a dinghy off a mobo, and we too get buzzed by inconsiderate boats. Worst offenders are little mobos sticking to a 6 knot limit, but sailing folks aren't immune to appreciating their wake under engine either. Whatever, you are right.

Photo was taken off a yacht chartered by circumnavigating pal (and forumite, Foxy) on a break to the UK. Lady in my cockpit was one of his crew I'd nicked, fender was still out on my foredeck because i knew i'd have to give her back.
