Caterpillar 3208. (375/425)

These are generally excellent and reliable engines but I have heard that the 425hp versions can require major rebuilds after 10yrs or so. I've had 2 boats with the 425hp engines and they were totally reliable but I nearly bought a boat a couple of years ago with the same engines but an oil sample showed excessive contamination and I didnt go ahead with the purchase
I've not heard of similar probs with the 375hp model so, for more assured reliability, this would be the one to go for. If you are considering buying a boat with these engines, it is definitely worthwile getting an engine survey done. Try David Shaw at Boat Survey

Both as tough as nails, not the most advanced engines in the world but super reliable, agree with previous post the 425 is probably getting near the limit for that block but have seen them in plant machinery with mega hours on them. RNLI have them fitted (de-rated) in the Mersey class and probably have been the most reliable in service to date. Cat service probably the best in the business, friend had a four year old Lochin with 3208's, had a problem, Cat took the port one, stripped and rebuilt it (even repainted it) and then sent it back good as new all he had to pay for was the transport and the out and refit labour. Try that with Volvo and see how far you get, zip all and probably laugh at you as well.
