Do any of you know a boat yard that can haul out and land store a large catamaran in Croatia or the Adriatic side of Italy? We are heading from Greece next year to cruise this region and I've been thinking it may be a better route to store the boat in this area. Thanks.

If you head up to Monfalcone, either Nautec or Ocean yards will haul your cat for the winter.
You can drive there in the spring too with heavy stuff. Otherwise daily Ryanair flights to "Trieste" airport very nearby.
I used Nautec for the last eight years, although I'm back in Ionian marine Preveza now.
Where your cat can easily be stored too.

Hi all,
I was considering buying a catamaran.
Do you find that marinas surcharge you for mooring Catamarans?
Is there a beam width restriction at most marinas?
How much extra on average do you have to pay?

Thanks,
Peter.

Most marinas/yards will charge more for cats, although there are exceptions.
If you buy a multihull, life at anchor will be cheaper and more comfortable.
Because of the extra space, ventilation due to being head to wind, and lack of rolling.
This does of course mean you have to carry serious ground tackle and use a bridle.
Nautec in Monfalcone didn't levy a surcharge, possibly uniquely in Italy.
The Preveza yards do, currently 25% in Ionian marine.
Despite this cats are on the increase, altho I have a thirty year old cruising tri.

Yes, they charge more. This year it ranged from 50% to 100% more. Most where 2X for the cat as we took two full berth widths. So, as Tri wrote, we stayed at anchor much of the time. It's better anyway. I like a berth about every 5 days so we can re-provission.

Thanks

Thanks for the suggestions. I sent off a couple inquiries. What I didn't realize is that it gets so cold there. It would be pretty difficult to winterize my boat completely. I better plan on heading back to Greece.

I am moored in NE Italy not far from Monfalcone. Last winter the ice was thick enough in my marina for someone to walk out into the middle of the open section. The temperature was -18° Celsius.

-18C!! Thank God I put antifreeze in the new Yanmar!
It regularly reaches such temperatures in the top of the Adriatic - it is the Alpine foothills influence. My lay-up winterization procedure is introduce engine antifreeze, pump out the fresh-water tank with making sure air is coming and that no water remains in the pumps. (I had to replace two foot-pumps one year from split casings - that year it only reached -16°C) and covers over the boat, which remains afloat.

I have an Italian friend who lives locally and keeps a watching brief on both our boats in the marina. Last year he sent me photos of the ice around my boat but assured me that enough swell and tidal movement occurs and that as the ice formed it did so in harmless broken particles. There was certainly no waterline damage when I arrived in the spring.

Yup, it gets pretty damned cold in the N Adriatic. My boat in Monfalcone last winter

Aktio is certainly very full and altho they can haul cats, their ramp being over 8mtrs wide, they say they have no more space ashore now. Cleopatra has plenty of space and also now a giant very wide travelhoist. Ionian will also cheerfully haul cats, inc ones that don't fit in the travel hoist like my own 7.5mtr wide tri. I returned there this year.
