A friend of mine has just inherited one that he admits has been very poorly maintained. To make it worse, it's currently in Malaysia, so miles from anywhere sensible.

I already own one wreck, but the additional 4ft plus a freezer etc is very tempting. Would an offer of a bottle of whiskey be rude, or do I need to sharpen my pencil?

Catalina 42 not very pretty, but not a bad sailing boat, done a couple of thousand miles on one. Much more solid build than the US Hunters. Used to be a lot in San Francisco, where at times you get plenty of wind and sea.

Seems to me an excellent way to avoid winter by going to live on board in the tropics. You might want to fit an air conditioner if there is shore power available. As said don't imagine Malaysia is far from marine services. ol'will

"he admits has been very poorly maintained."
Do you have any photographs?

Ahh, That little word "very".
Seems to me the difference between. "expensive" and "very expensive"

I remember seeing some of the floating wrecks in the creeks of Langkawi and wondering what they were like inside.
The tropics is moldy!!!!!

Update: the boat was struck by lightning. Nothing electrical works. It's been in the water for over four years with no new anti-fouling.

The children of the deceased owner are contesting the will, so it's not a given that my mate will actually get title to the boat.

My guess is that you'd have to spend several years and lots of moolah fixing her up i.e. you'd have to pay me good money to take it on.

If all goes well with the contested will, my mate thinks he'll try sell her for $20k. Good luck to him.
