We are currently looking at upgrading our 30ft boat and pushing off for distant shores. We have looked at many boats and don’t want an old slow pig. We like the layout of the two cabin Catalina 42 (aprox 1990). As a couple we think this should give us plenty of room.
Has anyone had any experience in these boats or know of any issues that will limit the boat as a semi-live aboard and offshore curser?

go to www.catalina42.org- you'll find all the help you could ever need. I have a catalina38 and have been very happy with her as a fast, comfortable offshore boat. Can't speak for the 42, but I can say that Catalina do seem to build them tough and rugged and on the plus side have very strong owners assosciations which receive very powerful aftersales and technical back up from the manufacturers. They publish an excellent magazine called Mainsheet.

Delivered one down to Gib few years ago. Sailed well, but bridgedeck was a bit low for offshore sailing & kept bottom washboard in at sea. Good accomodation. Owners used the forecabin/en suite. nav station at forward stbd side of saloon & not easy to get to when sailing. Build quality was good.

We have been sailing aboard our Catalina 42 (1989) for the last 5 years in the Caribbean. She is fast and a great cruiser for liveaboards. We are now in Guatemala, in the Rio Dulce and we have to put RELAX1 up for sale for health reasons. We are returning to the US this winter via Mexico. She is "Ready to Go" and has TLC all the time. If ur interested just e-mail me for all the details and pictures.
