Cat owners -> the new \"smug gits\"?

The forum's smug gits used to be the MAB owners - you know the owners of old, heavy displacement, full keel, smelly, wet, cramped, and last but not least British built craft.

Of late, there seems to be a marked increase of smug comments from cat owners. Whenever there's a "wot new boat" question; there they are: cat owners...

So, are we just poor deluded fools?

Two reasons I would never buy a cat:
1. They suck going to windward
2. Limited place to park - and if you do find a spot - you pay extra.

Ah, need I remind you that gentlemen never sail to windward?

Re: Cat owners -> the new \"smug gits\"?

It's wonderful really, a bit like a revolving restaurant where you get to see more of the views from the deck saloon.

Not to mention that they skid around an anchorage like a dog on lino.

Not if you moor to a bridle, they don't, though they often lie at a slightly different angle.

well, genrally tho, sitting flat at anchor is a better feature of cats, no resonant rolling. I wd've almost swapped boats with the cat behind when we anchored at cassis to hide from 35-40 knots of wind

1) 8 knots in a Force 4 at 35 degrees apparent in a 33 footer do you?

2) Under £200, deep water (for me, which means 3ft at low springs) less than 50 yards from home sound about right?

Smug? Too right! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: Cat owners -> the new \"smug gits\"?

Helped deliver the first Firebird from Gweek to Southampton years ago. Knew little about cats. The wind that had been on the beam was slowly dragged round as our speed increased. Ended up on a beat at 18 knots !!!

This was a bit like what happened to me a few weeks ago, went skiing, ended up on a red run by mistake ... WAY above my ability. Going faster and faster.

Both times I knew that if someting happened it was going to be BIG so basically just hung on and prayed.

Survived both /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

Just proved to me it is possible to live without breathing for half an hour /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Not smug,

just glad that others are beginning to recognise all those good points we have been talking about for ages

Re: Cat owners -> the new \"smug gits\"?

wood rhymes with good
mab rhymes with fab
cat rhymes with prat

Need I say more?

PS awb rhymes with bugger all, which sounds about right.

Re: Cat owners -> the new \"smug gits\"?

Is it polite to mention that there seems to be a lot of keels / keel bulbs dropping off at the moment?

Are they designed to do that? Why?

Re: Cat owners -> the new \"smug gits\"?

Not smug, but like to have a little gentle ribbing now and then.

2 reasons why I would never buy a mono

1. Cats are better
2. Tris are better.

Re: Cat owners -> the new \"smug gits\"?

On a slightly more serious note, I thought that part of the reason that long distance cruisers preferred monos was their ability to be loaded down with stuff without killing their performance. Is this still true? Clearly mat's cat is a whopper so could be loaded with a couple of tons of FBs without probs but on a 35-40 footer?

Re: Cat owners -> the new \"smug gits\"?

Rudders seem to enjoy falling off as well - eg various vessels in the last ARC experiencing serious humour failure after seeing their steering device saying Sayonara.......
At least cats have two of 'em....
And sensible monohullers also have two - the 2nd being in the form of a Hydrovane!
(I know that Guapa will agree with me re Hydrovanes!)

Re Chris' note above re loading up with provisions - Richard Woods arrived here a few years ago on his 33' cat Eclipse. Three crew on board, full cruising kit on board, plenty of provisions, and they still stormed across the Atlantic, dead level, like a train on rails.

Mate of mine races offshore in Med, against 60' mono's, in a Corsair F24 trimaran.

More often than not, wins as well.
Sails well to windward, other than in very light winds.
Achieving 15-20knts on average.

But not necassirly devoid of problems

Oh I love these fact filled discussions /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: Cat owners -> the new \"smug gits\"?

It's said many times before, but just to reiterate:
There are only three types of boat: a catamaran, half a catamaran and a cat and a half.

In all the years of sailing, I've met dozens of single-handers. Only one of them owns a cat. All the rest are mono owners, unable to keep a woman content with the rocking and rolling at anchor.
