Hi all,

It looks like I have a shaft seal failing on one of my water-jacket cooling system water pumps, so despite zero play nor noise in the bearings, I'm guessing I'll have to replace the pump rather than rebuild?

Anyway, if that's the case can anyone recommend any water pump suppliers or is it 'Finning or Bust'?

cheers,

Nick

I had this on one of my 3126 engine. I bought a new shaft from ASAP supplies in Beccles. It is a Sherwood pump. Work of the devil. You need a press to push the old shaft out of the housing, and the new one in.

Cheers for the reply.
That'll be the seawater pump. The one I was talking about was the internal cooling system pump. I've actually found it's not the pump that's leaking, just a leak is making its way down the back of the pump... This 'rebuilt' engine has been a bit of a leak fest.

Ok, apologies. Good luck with the solution. The Cat engine appeared well built to me, so there will be a fix out there.

Thanks.. I quite like the engines.. Just the rebuild before purchase was a bit slap-dash in my opinion so some remedial work to be done, 3 years later... (I get too distracted by shiny bits :D )

Did you try ASAP Supplies? It might also be worth talking to a commercial vehicle garage. I used to buy consumables from a garage that maintained buses.

Thanks @rafiki_ I'm certainly trying to use truck supplies where possible. Water pumps (even the regular engine one) are unfortunately marine specific (output elbow is different) so obviously about 4x the price but oils / coolants and non marine parts I'll def try down the truck route.

I'd like to get some parts from the US where Caterpillar are everywhere but the shipping costs seem astonishing. Why I can get nearly anything from China in about 15 minutes for under a pound but anything from the US costs about $1000 dollars delivery (not literally of course) is a mystery to me.

I was fortunate. I used to travel to Michigan 2 or 3 times a year. Used to bring stuff back in my hand luggage. The anodes raised a few eyebrows but I was never stopped. Again, try ASAP. I found them very helpful.
