I hate this time of year, too wet cold to do much on the boat really. Sitting here looking at the thing and have decided I need to do something about the two cast keels. Theres rust stains coming throught the antifoul. Thats got to come off anyway so I need to do something about the rust.
The keels are rough cast as in they ain't smooth and they ain't pretty. I've no problem taking all the crud off. That'll be taken care of with a scaler running off the compressor. What do I coat them with? The boat takes the ground at LWS so the keels will sink into the stone laden mud. So whatever I put on there is going to get a bit of a battering.
Do I give them a coat of rust treatment first before putting a coat of something on before the A/F. And I'm not going to be able to get the scaler up to the root of the keels as they're in a receess in the grp hull.

What do you do?

I used a rust convertor I can't remember the brand but it mells nice, then a coat of primacon then antifoul. This has lasted a couple of seasons so far, but I don't dry out (not intentionally anyway). Avoid getting getting the A/F in contact with the steel, but I'm sure you know this ;)

Two possible approaches

  • Wash and grit bast to remove all traces of salt and rust and old antifouling. Prime immediately, before any surface rusting occurs.

  • Scrape off loose antifouling and loose rust ... apply new antifouling.

If really rough surface, porous, then use acid rust remover to get remains off from pitholes - then whatever anticorrosive you prefer.
For more permanent solution take a zinc kind primer, there are such that are used as substitute to zinc cover, like zinc-chromate kind. On this cover of epoxy-tar (coal tar epoxy) which is a bit elastic paint. There are ready systems of this kind for ship hull protection, may be a good idea to look around in a shipyard for a bit of it with good price and advice.

As what do I do? Prefer lead ;)
