A mate is considering taking his boat down from UK & leaving it in Cascais for a few weeks, before moving south. What is it like there, in terms of prices/facilities. Last time I was there, was over 5 years ago, so any update information would be useful.

Never sailed there, but the sister in law lives in Cascais and I've been a couple of times for a couple of weeks. Nice marina, lively town, seems to have all the facilities required, no idea of prices, though. Lots of boats anchored in the bay, though this'd be no use for a long unaccompanied stay.

Yep, Cascais is v pricey. An alternative is the marina under the suspension bridge in Lisbon (forgotten name) and handier for transfers.

Be advised that the marina by the bridge is very noisy........

Paul

Very noisy indeed from bridge traffic and bars but the usual visitors marina is Alcantara, further up the estuary behind the container port. Much cheaper than Cascais or Oeras, well sheltered and closer to the airport. Long term berthing prices in all the Camera marinas are a bit strange in that 6 months has to be Jan to June or June to Dec, not (say) March to Sept. There is another marina even further up the estuary, where Expo was but not sure if it's silting up again.

We stayed there for maybe six months - loved it - very clean - great staff - lovely walks and bike rides along the coast or the river - easy access to Lisbon - loved sintra nearby - wouldn't hesitate to go back - pilot book says expensive and don't go - twaddle €600 a month all inc for 15 m boat - the stuff further down the Tagus river is scruffy - dirty and noisy

Mone draw back :
Watch for big storms , while we were there rocks the size of ford fiestas were washed up onto the sea wall and the cliff top path was closed due to the waves (it's 100 ft up) the pontoon we WERE on was smashed up in what was a massive storm with 16 m waves etc.

Don't know when you were in Cascais but 15m in Port of Lisbon marinas costs €504 this year incl VAT. With local contacts, we use the Doca de Belem or Bom Sucesso which are in the most attractive area of the river near museums and Jeronimos certainly not "scruffy and noisy" and closer to the city and airport.

The prices on this link are 2014 but I was told they have been held.

Mate has a 24m boat.

Expensive, but a lovely town.

On a few occasions I've left mine in Alacantra up in the city opposite the container berth. Bit of a hike to the supermarkets, but cheap-ish. Not so close to the bridge as the other marina. Loos are a bit tired (or were). I'd go back.

Three years since I was there - wallet still hurts. znice town, though.
I stopped a couple of nights on the way down in Aug 2014, 40 ish euros for a night for my 38ft, although they did give me a nice bottle of wine! Lovely town, really nice, good restaurants etc, spent the second night in the anchorage though, that was free!
