I know there was a recent thread regarding buying and shipping equipment from the US, my quick search does not find it, can anyone recall/point me in the right direction please.

I have bought several items from the States over the years and never had any complaints. That said I have just taken delivery of a new cover for my boat, with delivery it was £1850.

Now, a first for me was having to pay import duty and VAT plus some storage and paperwork charges in total another £642.80 Just a word of warning that you may just get stung for some more cash before you can have the goods you have paid for overseas.

Thanks for the warning Tom, that sounds a little steep I was hoping to get a figure like a percentage to add to purchase price.

Shipping and charges on my Monitor windvane came to about £450. Without looking it up, I think that must have been about 25%.

Convert to pounds at the rate you will actually get. Then add 42% to cover shipping, import duty, handling charge and VAT. That's the average; for long or heavy parcels the freight may be more and for small, light items it may be less.

Thanks for the warning Tom, that sounds a little steep I was hoping to get a figure like a percentage to add to purchase price.

Mine works out at approx 36% but be aware that VAT is charged at varying rates from 1-17.5% depending on what you purchase.
