Carpet for \'walls\' of cabin

Hi again guys,
I have decided on upholstery to use for the seats in my 25ft sports cruiser, now all I need is to get the 'walls' (Gunnels) sorted. I have a Panther 19ft cuddy previous to this boat, which had a dark navy (Bit darker than a royal blue) carpet. It looked the business. It was a flexible carpet but hard wearing. It could easily take a good scrubbing. It was very shallow ie. not a thick carpet

I've been asking local carpet shops and they are absolutily no help (surprise surprise!). I don't feel that I need 'marine' carpet as it's going to be dry in the cabin and the carpet will never be exposed to moisture, so a normal carpet should suffice. Unfortunately I can't get my hands on a sample from the old Panther to bring to a carpet supplier.

Does anyone know what type or carpet i'm talking about, or what type of carpet would be suitable for my needs? At least if I had a name of the type of carpet, it may help the carpet supplier to find me something

Apologies in advance for the brutal explination!

Re: Carpet for \'walls\' of cabin

Forgot to mention i'm in Ireland, so a place with a good online shop would be a key advantage! Will try hawkhouse online, cheers

Re: Carpet for \'walls\' of cabin

I believe this type of corded carpet is used in exhibition halls and booths. An exhibitions supplier might help.

Re: Carpet for \'walls\' of cabin

Toomer & Hayter who are in the Poole/Bournemouth area of the UK sell boat carpet and have va verty good mail order service to boot!
Just give them a ring and they will send you a sample/shade card and then you can choose the colour to suioy your boat.
Its great stuff - totally inert and waterproof too.
Good luck.
Just google their name to make contact

Re: Carpet for \'walls\' of cabin

Excellent thanks for all the names and links lads. I'm going to go round to the carpet shops again today and see if they can be of a little more assistance this time

Re: Carpet for \'walls\' of cabin

Managed to get some carpet locally for a bargain of €10! It's a little tough so we'll see what the carpet fitter says. Worst comes to worst i'll make some floor mats out of it. Either way, at 10euro you cant go wrong

Re: Carpet for \'walls\' of cabin

I used corded normal domestic in my boat, it goes up over
a set of steps and up into alcoves.
And it is very hard wearing

Re: Carpet for \'walls\' of cabin

I have run out, with only a tiny bit left to do.. typical! I'll go to the shop tomorrow and try to order some more

Re: Carpet for \'walls\' of cabin

I usually get bathroom quality domestic carpet on floor & aft (grand-daughter's) cabin walls as it withstands wet, sandy & muddy hands, feet, toys & boots better. But I'm a yottie & never go near a marina so we use dinghies, wellies & beaches frequently. I also swim off the boat a lot - as implied by avatar.

Re: Carpet for \'walls\' of cabin

Searush, - Here in the west of Ireland we don't believe in marinas! My weekends consist of mooring up on an island, dirnking beer, cooking a BBQ, lighting a big bonfire and then rolling down a mucky trail to the pier... the more hard wearing the better!

Re: Carpet for \'walls\' of cabin

Fairy Nuff, Nial & good on yer! It's just that the majority of posters on this forum are exclusively marina based.

I didn't check your location (apologies) but now you have brought it to my attention I understand completely, I've bin there & seen it!

Re: Carpet for \'walls\' of cabin

This is looking like more and more of a DIY as I go on. No one wants to touch the job (carpet fitter that is) because 'its not worth their while' .... argh! Going to get down to the boat tomorrow and do some fine cutting (i've done the basic measurment cuts so far) and get the stuff into place. Then when I know it fits well i'll go and get me some carpet clue.

While i'm at it i'm re-doing the hand-rail seals while they're exposed

Progress

Thought i'd share my progress so far:

A *very* slow process, I see why no one would touch it with a barge pole. Hope to finish the cutting out tomorrow and send the carpet off to get the exposed edges made less ugly
