Thinking of maybe going to Caribbean in August. Would that be a stupid thing to do (w.r.t. hurricanes) or is it a reasonable proposition? Have not been there before but am considering BVIs for 2 weeks. Any views from those with experience out there are welcome!

cheers,
Jo

Some risk but assuming you are chartering then they manage the risk. Just get off the boat and let them deal with the problem.

I spent some years as a liveaboard in that region and I would want to be further south. St Vincent to Trinidad.

Charter out of St Vincent or Grenada and do the Grenadines.

If you are not living on the edge you are taking up too much space.

Being from the Carib Bean I can quite comfortably say - WHO Knows?? Its a little bit like how longs a piece of string - All I can say is tha I was in Barbados for the whole of August and the first two weeks of September last year and there wasn't one Hurricane, we also went over to St Vincent and the Grenadines for a few days and it was sunny and bright. Well worth a visit.

My Uncle said to me that the worst time for Hurricanes and such like is the end of September onwards or when the Mount Gay Rum runs out.

I hope this helps, say hi to the Bean for me!!

As a liveaboard here in BVI and having spent last hurricane season here, I would say that this is probably one of the best islands to visit in the season. The various Govt. services are more developed here than our sister islands to the south and whilst there is no guarantee of missing a hurricane at any time April through December if you look at the records, we have not had one here for 11 years. I'm sure Grenada said the same in 2004 but as you will be under the 'care' of a charter company, if there is any hint of bad weather approaching, it is a safe bet you will be transported west out of here very quickly and a lot more easily than from those islands to the south. Not that it will affect you but there are proven hurricane holes here, that withstood 1995.
If you do come then you will be rewarded with far less crowded anchorages and restaurants/bars that are still open and cheaper charter rates.

The BVI's are wonderful in August, much less crowded than normal. I often go then. The first two weeks most restaurants and bars are still open but even at the end of the month aaound 50% of places will still be open.

As for hurricanes... The BVI's have been hit by 6 in the last 50 years... One in August, four in September and one in October. Statistically you are pretty safe but of course it could happen to you.
