With Easter coming up I have put some pics on BriansSailingPictures@uk.msnusers.com
of Carentan and Carteret in case anybody was wondering what these alternatives to Cherbourg/St Vaast were like. Better food and cheaper are two things I can think of.
Wind dependant I hope to get to somewhere between Fecamp and Carteret over the four days.

Heading for Carentan this summer. Looks good from your pics.
Do you have any pics of the approaches to the lock from seaward?
Is the approach as 'frightening' as it sounds?

Re: Carentan

Went to Carentan some years ago, when they were building the road under the river near the lock. Don't remember any problems certainly nothing remotely frightening. Be prepared to spend several lazy days there though.

Why not try Isigny as well?

We've been in to Carentan twice in the last 3 years. The channel is well marked and deep enough provided you observe the rise of tide graph in the Almanack. We made it in one tide from St. Vaast by leaving as soon as the gate opens.
I can recomend the restaurant across the canal from the marina. It is upstairs above a bar called "Majic".

Carteret is a nice place, not a huge amount there but a 20 min walk will take you to barneville which has a market and a quite a few shops.

As for navigation, its fairly simple but there is a sandbank to the north of the northerly pier which needs watching. When going down the kilometre long channel to the marina for the first time it is very strange as the marina walls are submerged leaving just the port and starboard beacons that mark the entrance to the marina above the water. As the marina wall is at an angle and channel curves when approaching it, the beacons appear to be on the wrong sides but as you get closer all is revealed. Visitors pontoon usually very busy and its likely you'd have to raft up unless you pop into the harbourmasters office first.

Well worth a visit! Nothing like eating at a restaurant on the quayside watching the boats go by and the sun setting over Jersey...
