might have to bring a fin keeler 1.9m draft from pwllheli to cardiff in March. anybody got any more local information than the silk cut about which ports I can enter / moor in with protection from the usual SW / W/NW winds?

Looks to me as if there is nothing between pwllheli and milford. what is the actual marina depth at aberystwyth?

I've the David Taylor pilot book (Irish Sea & Lundy Pilot) and it gives the dredged depth at Aberystwyth Marina as 1.7m with a channel depth of 0.5m at MLWS. That info might be out of date of course but you could always ring the marina to confirm.

thats the same info as the silk cut. Mind you in theory the depths at neaps would be 5.2 +1.7 -1.7 and at springs .7 +1.7. so maybe just?

Looking at the chart I wonder if Aberystwyth would be of that much benefit over a direct route from Pwllheli to Milford Haven , especially if you have to beat against a W or SW the following day.

By the way, is this a new boat?

Aber, you are limited on tides and depth - also very expensive with bad attitude
Straight across the bay and then anchor and kip in Fishguard
Fishguard you can get in near the town and hide from most things
Slip around the end and then into Dale and borrow a mooring - but do your sums right.
simple formula, if you know the time of arrival, depth when you arrive etc

Nice trip to do - did it single handed a few years ago but in a bilge keeler.

Then choose your spot in

you look to be prohibited from anchoring in much of fishguard - only a limited area by the eastern breakwater looks available. and not much shelter either.

I was there in 2005 on my boat(loa 30ft) and was the most expensive we visited that summer,

its the only marina on the that stretch of coastline so that has some bearing on costs i suppose,
My boat draws 2ft 6 inches so i could get in on most tides but i think 3 hours either side of HW is ok.
Milford marina was great, 24 hrs access nice staff and they let me off my 5ft bowsprit when they tallied up the fee. /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

Hi Chris Agree about nice staff but last time I was in Milford you could only lock in/out at certain times and not at all at LW? Maybe they have dredged the entrance or have different arrangements now?
