Cardiff - Swansea Long weekend sail

Hi Guys,

I am planning a trip to Swansea from Cardiff on Saturday, returning Tuesday. Anyone fancy sailing in company?

For info my boat cruises at around 4kts, the trip should take around 8 - 10 hours, depending on wind strength and direction. Tide will be minimal as we will be on Neaps (HW - 9.3 LW - 4.6 avonmouth)

Departing on the 1230 (1130UTC) lock-out.

Weather info will be posted closer to the trip.

Winds expected for tomorrow - North(ish) F4 or less - most likely not going to be more than 10kts

Departing Cardiff at revised time of 1200 (barrage lock out) - Arriving Swansea Bay area around 2000hrs anchoring between Porthcawl and Mumbles - depending on conditions. Passage will include night sailing, so for those who do not like night sailing - you have been given fair warning.

If anyone is interested, the Swansea Music Festival is on until Sunday.

Sunday - Variable direction winds of less than 10kts expected
Monday - Hopefully a West/North West F4/5
Tuesday - West/North West F3-5 up to 25kts possible

Passage to swansea went very well.

The wind was a fairly constant 6-8kts occasionally picking up to 11 or 12kts.

Left Cardiff 1200 lock-out, arriving Mumbles around 2130!

Shame no-one sailed along, although there was a few ships to keep us company!

Sounds like nice conditions, Swansea bay can get nasty. I had forgotten Swansea is so far, just over 2 hours from Cardiff for me now I have turned to the dark side . Probably cheaper for you though.

Sailed back to Cardiff yesterday. No wind so had to motor!

I was reminded on Tuesday about how windy squalls can be - I had readings of over 45kts whilst sailing bare pole downwind at over 6.5kts with the tide also flowing at about 4kts in the same direction as I was! If my maths is correct that means the true wind was at least 55.5kts! This went on for about 20 minutes all whilst being driven towards Scarweather Sandbank!

With this said, I did enjoy the sail - dispite the sand bank being less than 1 mile away!
