Any advice for passage plan for Cardiff - Portishead for a first-timer? Just about getting used to tides going west but tidal rates seem pretty daunting in the Avon area.
Go for it! Do the sums and go with the tide, not going anywhere against it. Does that thing at Monkton still have that dreadful mournful sound? Always scared the daylights out of me.
Yea, come on over!
We are out of Bristol on Sat AM and staying over at Portishead Saturday night.
Could give you a tow into Portishead if you find yourself going backwards. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
There is a bit of a tradition of Mobos rescuing our sailing friends lately. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
But seriously, you will feel such a sense of achievement getting over, the tide times are a little better next weekend.
Mind you, I expect you'll be at Portishead before we leave Bristol, HW is around 10AM ans SWMBO don't want to get up to early!
Leave cardiff about 3or 4 hours before hw then head straight for Portishead leaving the North Cardiff Buoy to Stbd then pass between the English and Wlsh and the South Mid Grounds before following the buoyed channel to Prtishead.
from the South mid grounds on keep a sharp look out for ships and ideally keep to the edge or just outside the buoyed channel.
On arrival motor into the bay outside the locks and call on Channel 80 to lock in.
coming back leave between HW and 3 hours after to carry the ebb back to Cardiff.
If on the way back you arrive at Cardiff at LW on a spring tide beware of shallows near the North Cardiff Buoy. You may need to carry on down outside the Cardiff grounds to the South Cardiff Buoy then come back up past Penarth.
