I understand that the Milford Haven Port Authority has reached a commercial agreement whereby Cardiff Marine Group will shortly be taking over the running of Milford Marina. Presumably an announcement will be made soon.

Can I ask those of you berthed at Cardiff Marina how the proprietors treat you? As we're based at Milford I have an obvious interest in learning about the company.

I gather that there are all sorts of grandiose plans for Milford Haven. It will be interesting to see what transpires.

Not berthed at Cardiff Marina but have had some dealings with the company for repair work on my boat. They are, in my experience, a decent outfit to deal with and very receptive to problems if you have any.

However, Milford is a very long way from Cardiff so it really depends on who they appoint to run the show down there and how rapacious the local authority has been in the contract. Cardiff is a competitive market with 4 berthing choices and lots of room - I doubt that Milford is.

Thanks for your response.

The Marina, the Milford Docks and much more all belong to the Milford Haven Port Authority, not Pembrokeshire County Council. Consequently I have no idea whether MHPA will be more or less avaricious than the average LA.

There are two marinas in the haven plus Rudders Boatyard, Lawrenny moorings and a large number of other moorings etc. Pro rata, for the populations involved, I suspect that the Haven has at least as much berthing as Cardiff, if not more. This year neither Milford Marina nor Neyland Marina were completely full, despite some refugees from the charging excesses of Aberystwth.

Good to hear you regard them as a decent outfit.

many happy memories of milford marina,a few years ago it was as cheap to keep my boat there as it was to keep in a club at cardiff bay,and more facilities.but i was led to belive that a couple of years ago that it was full and the visitors in the summer rafted up.what experiances i have had with the people taking over have been good what i belive they will push the stacking system of the smaller boats. i think that a lot depends on whether mhpa do with the moorings on the cleddua. if they are taken over and privatetised who knows what will happen.

Rafting up at Milford was my experience too, and Neyland was full - so I am surprised at Coasters comments. Nevertheless, if there now is spare room it can only be to the good.

There's been no news locally that they are to take over at Milford Marina as well.

My understanding is that the takeover may be scheduled for January.

The most interesting snippet I heard is a proposal to modify the lock, giving leisure boat access to Milford Dock for most of the tide. Frankly I'm dubious about the financial viability of such a scheme.

We'll have to wait and see what happens.

Cardiff Marine Group is involved in the plans for a proposed new marina at the old Nato Jetty at Burton Ferry near Neyland. See the local newspaper cutting here:

Burton Ferry marina - u wont get a boat in to Burton Ferry marina at a low tide and thay will have fun making it a marina but i no ther is a nice scrubing gridd on the out side of the old Nato Jetty wall and the old Nato Jetty dos not hold water in on the in side of the wall but i thik it will hold 50 boats ?

.

I agree. Modifying the lock gates would be a massive job and an expensive one. Someone would have to pay for it, the berth holders probably. In the present economic climate I can't see any one in their right mind taking that job on. Especially not in this part of the world, the Mediterranean perhaps.
The same goes for the proposed Burton Ferry Marina, which as Watermint says would not be accessible at low tides.

If Milford were in the Mediterranean there'd be no need for a lock - no tide! (At least, nothing to speak of, by Bristol Channel standards.)

The NATO Jetty "scheme" sounds like a red herring. However it does suggest that the Cardiff Marine Group has an interest in the area.

if i was in a position and had the money, the area i would concentrate on is castle pill. it already has a gate there, i know it would be challange but it has been talked about in the past

I think that a new gate or lock would be required. The ebb tide runs out of Castle Pill at a considerable rate. Whilst the pill might make an attractive location for a marina it seems a shame to disturb a quiet backwater where old boats can dream their remaining days away.

ther is somthing in the deeds of Castle Pil from ww2 and the brige shod not be closd at Castle Pil or fit a marina gate of it being a tidel river

the National Park Authority of the Planning Officer wood probley say no of having a new marina in milford haven of it being a Conserving area all over pembrokeshire

I had no problem visiting Milford marina this summer, seemed to be space. They had a go at trying to sell me a permanent berth there too so that implies it's not full.

You can't get in/out of Milford at low tide either, in fact that was the most inconvienient thing was figuring out the lock times.

ther is a lot of thing on milford haven what the Milford Haven Port Authority what thay think thay owned on Milford Haven but thay dont owned

thar ar been post war deeds on boat moring,s what the Milford Haven Port Authority triy to charg u money but thay cant

i think the is no need for a new of having Milford Marina and Neyland Marina and ther is hardley no boats in the Marina,s and whats the pont by the end of the day / just wasting money for no need

- big fat person siting on a office tring to - development programme over the next few years; involving over £5m of joint investment from Milford Haven Port Authority and Cardiff Marine Group.

i can not see them dowing it :)

More news

The BBC local news has this article. For me the two most interesting elements are the mentions of dry-stacking and new locking.

I've only known Pembrokeshire reasonably well, as a frequent visitor, since the 1980s. During the past decade we regularly trailed a boat to Milford and, since acquiring a larger one, have had a permanent berth in Milford Marina since summer 2009. However, in that time there have been quite a few changes.

It seems obvious that in the last two years there has been insufficient economic activity and demand for leisure boating services to sustain the existing infrastructure. So, whilst I hate the thought of overdevelopment, perhaps the involvement of Cardiff Marine Group will be beneficial. Nothing stays the same indefinitely.

Pembrokeshire Marine Group

Hi, I am glad to see that you are all taking an interest in the exciting plans for Milford Marina. I would like to introduce myself. I am the MD of the new Management Company and would be more than happy to discuss the proposals with you via this blog, phone or email.

You can be assured that Pembrokeshire Marine Group and Cardiff Marine Group have a long term commitment to Milford Marina and we look forward to developing the business and assisting other businesses to thrive.

We look forward to promoting Milford Haven town as a destination to the benefit of the local community and Pembrokeshire.

Hello Nathan. Thanks for your response to this thread.

So far as I am concerned, Pembrokeshire Marine Group (PMG) will be much appreciated if it keeps the public closely informed about your immediate plans. We understand that there are commercial confidentialites but a regular email newsletter with solid information will generate a lot of goodwill.

Please resist your PR advisors who will no doubt want you to send out lots of meaningless platitudes and vague intentions. Keep it simple and factual. One of Milford Marina's failings has been poor communication with berth holders.

At the top of of many people's lists of concerns will be the lock. After the various fiascos during 2010 you need to set out PMG's short and medium term plans, so far as you can at this stage. Simply saying that "the lock will be improved" is not enough.

MHPA have a reasonable emailing list for Notices etc. Presumably you've obtained that from them? I expect that with a little digging you'll be able to acquire email contact details for 90% of Milford Marina berth holders. By cutting out postal correspondence for those that agree to it you'll reduce admin costs, speed up contact with interested parties and make it easy to send a monthly newsletter. But don't yield to the temptation to use the email contact list for junk.

Many of us don't like change so the next six months will be crucial to winning hearts and minds. Good luck.
