Just bought one of these for the boat with an LCD display of parts per million of CO

Problem is the instructions say that it should be fitted at a height of 1.5 metres from ground level.

I thought that It would be better to fit it at just below berth height in order that in the worst case scenario it went off before getting to any sleeping occupants - CO being heavier than air like co2 ? or is it the other way round -this is my question.

I understood that CO rises (lighter than air) so I've mounted mine at roof level, in the middle of the boat.

However, I am concerned that if motoring on passage crew may sleep in the quarterberth and some gas could collect there, so I've fixed my alarm with a heavy duty velcro pad where it sits in position, securely, either in position no.1 or just above the crew sleeping position in the quarterberth

I have just fitted one and it specifies in the instructions: "Apparatus located in sleeping rooms and in rooms remote from the fuel burning appliance should be located relatively close to the breathing zone of the occupants."

I put mine quite near the galley contrary to the instructions (as it was a convenient spot). It's actually very comforting to see the ppm rise slightly when the cooker is in use - shows it's working under actual conditions without using the test button.

Of course, if you put it too close, the alarm would go off, but worth experimenting to find a position that just provides a bit of CO.

My thinking exactly for the berth area in the aft cabin especially if overnighting on passage witht the engine on.

Read a worrying article some months back of a crew slowly going down with CO poisoning from the engine with a leaking exhaust into the living areas - this is what prompted the purchase.

If your still using one of these on your boat I think the animal welfare police are going to get very upset with you

I tested mine when I first got it in my van on the way to and from work in the various queues in the rush hours around Croydon and couldnt believe the numbers that came up when sitting in a jam with the vents blowing inside !!
