We are a family of 2 parents and 5 kids of various ages and 2 large dogs. Our lovely 1960’s boat sleeps 2 comfortably and 4 at a push. So it is inevitable that we all cannot all go for weekends away onboard. My wife likes day sailing but doesn’t want to sleep aboard or leave the dogs behind if it can be helped.

We are considering buying a caravan so that some of the family can sail to a destination and the rest can go by car. We can then all meet up for the evenings and switch crew around, so that all those that want to sail can, and the dog-walkers amongst us can enjoy that instead.

We are based in Swanwick, Hamble so expect to sail within 1, 2 or 3 days, from home berth. I was wondering if anyone can recommend camp sites close to marinas.

Thanks in advance,
Phill

There is a marina up by Emsworth that we have been in to ... can't remember name ... Tarquin ??? and there was a caravan park with a lake very close to Chichester ... Lakeside ???

All many moons ago hence memory lapse.

Any sites near Island Harbour?

Thanks guys,

Current thinking is do the "passage to Portland" in June and the rest of the family join us from somwhere local to Weymouth

Then do Chichester Marina in late July (being Premier customers we get 5 days free)

Any local recomendations gratefully recieved.

I expect it's too close to your home marina but there is a caravan site adjacent to mercury marina on the Hamble.

While its close, thats a great idea, we could do a "test run" and see how it works out. Thanks for the suggestion.

Why not look at 'Redcliffe farm' (www.redcliffefarmcamping.co.uk/about.html) on the River Frome going up towards Wareham. I think there may also be a camping site just down stream at Ridge wharf just outside the boatyard. Certainly a lovely place to be for a few days.

The other one is Ridge Farm which is just outside the Ridge Wharf entrance. http://www.ridgefarm.co.uk/ .We stayed here for a weekend a couple of years back, ver nice but unlike redcliffe doesn't have a direct river walk to Wareham. Also the nearest mooring would be a 10 minute walk, where as redcliffe has close ties with the yacht club which has visitor moorings a stones throw from the site.

Sites

Threre is a caravan/camping site about 5 mins walk from Southsea Marina.
I have never used it but it looks convenient

if you want to go East, there's a summer campsite in East Brighton Park at Brighton, 10 minutes walk from the marina. There are also a few caravan sites with a close distance, a mile or so of Eastbourne marina.

Thanks everyone. Based on the excellent ideas / sites suggested we have just been out and put a deposit on a 2nd hand caravan and awning.

Thanks again, much apriciated.
