You'll be lucky. I have sailed into Monaco in the past and there's no way you'll get near the waterfront during the GP week-end. I was told that even those who have an annual mooring in the harbour are moved on to make way for those who will pay the big bucks for mooring stern to to watch the race.

Have you noticed how the people on those boats can look at you and manage to say - I'm on this boat and you're just a pleb walking by without opening their mouths - and most of them can do that from behind dark glasses too!

You need to look for the current crop of special offers but Plymouth Roscoff will probably save a lot of driving over the alternatives.

Portsmouth St Malo or Portsmouth Caen are less driving than Cherbourg.

We were driving back to Cherbourg from Bordeaux one year when we passed a sign saying Mulsanne. Wound down the window and we could hear the race in progress. From the traffic on the roads you wouldn't have known it was on apart from convoys of old British sports cars everywhere!

If you get the Wednesday night Ferry from Portsmouth to Caen it is full of classic sports cars. If that boat went down it would be a catastrophe to old sports car lovers.

They separate the sports cars from the normal motors by directing the sports to the upper car deck. The last time I went we drove down in my Escort cabriolet. I have never been so embarrassed when they directed me to the upper deck. I was surrounded by AC Cobras, E-Types, Austin Healys and the like.

That was also the year I saw a guy stuff his E-type into a tree, the tree finished up in the passenger foot well, luckily he was on his own.

When the ferry pulls in to Caen the port is full of French lads looking to spot some classic sports cars, it is a quite exciting time driving through the hoards of blokes.

Just writing this is making me hanker to go this year.

Dover to Boulogne so maybe a bit out of the way.
SPEEDFERRIES

Offer some stunning deals.

Mind you Powerskipper did post a pic of them aground in the Solent,so it may be worth taking HH VHF&GPS so that you can offer helpful navigation advice!

What might be cheapest is to cardboard box up your stuff and get it taken by lorry and delivered to the boat in France - Fly yourselves by Ryan air and hire a car if you need it at the other end. I found doing the reverse of that much cheaper & more convenient! If you want the lorry co I used mail me.

The cheapest way across at the moment is via Dover - Boulogne (not ideal for the SW!!!!) using the new speedferries.com
It is bar far the cheapest way across if you don't mind the drive.
I am going to Le Mans in June and have got a five day crossing with car + 4 for £50 return!!!
Certainly worth a look!

Peter I tried to reply to your mail but your box - space allocation is full - The company I have used to ship my boxes from home to the boat is :-

Richard Geary
Peters & May Ltd.
Branch Manager - Plymouth
Tel: 00 44 (0)1752 794 794
Mobile: 00 44 (0)7887 686 734
Fax: 00 44 (0)1752 775 699
Email: richard@petersandmay.com
WEB: www.petersandmay.com
"I am on leave from 27th for 10 days so my colleague Neil Eldred will be handling the shipment. Neil is on the same number as me - 01752 794 794 and his email is neile@petersandmay.com"

Have branches all over the UK I think... I have had an excellent service from Richard so far - the boxes and dinghy/outboard were picked up yesterday to be palletized and sent to the UK for delivery to my boat when I get there in 10 days or so. The cost of my using a lorry shipment method, flying Ryan air and hiring a car works out much cheaper than driving and using a ferry... Low cost airlines have changed my traveling habits totally - used to drive everywhere before!

use my private email if you want more info. michael.briant@wanadoo.fr
