I'm thinking of a summer bareboat charter in/around this area.

Does anyone have any experience of chartering here or can recommend a good charter co?
Any other comments ar advice would be welcomed.

Did it 3 years ago, bareboat from Mystic in Connecticut. Recommend the Elizabeth Islands especially Cuttyhunk with its floating raw bar and an anchorage next to the seaplane landing 'strip', Newport Harbour, Jamestown, the seafood, the welcome. Get a boat with radar, it can be v foggy, and a decent engine as wind can be light. And get a really good handover, concentrating on the holding tank...we had a pumpout horrorshow in Block Island that still makes me shudder. We had a Hunter (US not UK) 39 feet, and it was comfortable if a bit ugly. Had some help from a liveaboard when we had a small engine problem - he also prayed for us in the cockpit before dinghying away. It was a great week.

I sailed up to Newport 12 years ago - nice place, lots to do, marinas were expensive, but we could anchor out OK then, no worries.

Some good pubs, and there was an excellent deli by the entrance to Newport Onshore marina (still going?) that created the most wonderful custom-built sandwiches.

We then went through the Cape Cod canal, and sailed over to Provincetown on the Cape, which was well worth a visit, and then an overnight sail up to Rockland in Maine. Do consider chartering a boat 'down east' as an alternative to getting one in (eg) Newport.

Maine is a lovely cruising area - you could easily spend a week I am sure just pottering about in Penobscot Bay.

Be aware of the possibility of fog - and you will also be made very aware of the high density lobster pot markers - they were everywhere, even amongst the moorings in the harbours.

Re access, I remember that both Rockland and Newport had good Greyhound bus connections to Boston's airport.

I've sailed these waters. Beautiful, but expensive (very) marinas. Friendly locals and worth doing, but you might find yourself anchoring sometimes to preserve the wallet. eg Marthas Vineyard we avoided because the fee was in the HUNDREDS of dollars!! OK so it was a 55 foot boat but....
