Can anyone suggest an online supplier of cloth suitable for sail covers etc? Any idea where I can get a second hand industrial sewing machine up to the job of knocking up items like sail bags, dodgers etc?

I get my acrylic canvas from Hawke House Marine. A google should turn up their website for on-line ordering.
I wouldn't bother with an industrial machine, they are built for speed rather than "punch". An ordinary domestic machine with a denim needle will go through multiple layers of acrylic without any problem.
My Jones machine was bought off Ebay for not many sovs. It has run up a cockpit cover, awning and all the upholstery covers.

I have bought a couple of sewing machines at car boot sales. One was a Singer, about 20 years old, with lots of plastic bits, which lasted about 3 weeks. The second was a Frister Rossman, probably 40 years old, weighs a ton and made with lots of cast iron. Cost me a fiver and runs like a Rolls-Royce.
Hawke House will sell you the correct thread (UV reisistant). The needles are I think size 110, which you can get at any sewing shop.

Agree about the sewing machine. A sturdy Domestic will do. You don't need fancy stiches but zigzag is handy for sail repairs.
My ancient £30 second hand Frister Rossman (SWMBO wouldn't let me use hers) has made two overall boat covers, a sophisticated cockpit tent and its just getting into its stride.
Check that you can change the lower tension.
For supplies also check out Point North.

I fancy a go at a cover when I have time (ha ha)

Does this have the zig zag? - Do you have a type / model number I can look out for?

Mine is a Frister Rossman 45 - does straight, zig-zag and has a reverse lever which is useful when you want to finish a seam without it all coming undone again. Like this one, which is on eBay

pointnorth.co.uk are good, their postage charge is much lower than others, sailcloth.co.uk is kayospruce who are local to me, they are good also.
I have a Jones sewing machine, bought from local high st sewing machine shop for £50, it does zig zag, and has coped with the heavy pvc material as used for curtain-side lorries, plus bits of webbing stitched on for fastenings. I'd never used a sewing machine before, but its not hard, you just need a good stock of needles!
I did look at used sailmakers machines, about 4 years ago they started at £300, but often need a dedicated bench as the foot lift is knee-operated under the desk as it were.
There is a firm in Waterlooville that dealt in them.
Hope that helps,
Chris
