Canvas Button Punch - Recommendation

Hi there,

Does anyone have a recommendation for a good canvas button punch?

I have a small 5m boat, and it needs some new buttons on its cover - but when I search on the internet I get a lot of very useful US sites, unfortunately, none in UK :(

Neil, if you Google a company called Jc Clarke marine you'll find good info

There are three tools:
1. The ones where you hit a punch with a hammer. A bit rubbish, but cheap. A lot rubbish actually.
2. The ones that look like mole grips but on the nipping faces a die and punch have been welded on. Still bit rubbish, but will do
3. The only tool that ALL pros use. It has no competitors. Called pres n snap, made in USA but widely available in Europe. Does a pro job. You spend your early boating career with 1+2 but ultimately you have to buy 3, as I did some years ago. Not cheap. I'm happy to lend but depends on location because mine is in south of France and I can't bring it on plane as they would confiscate it as a "workmans tool".

Search for W4 Studs and W4 Stud closing tool

Cheap but okay if you only have a few to do.

Alternatively take the canvas in for repair somewhere that makes new covers . Probably very cheap .

Have you tried a company called "Baseline Marine". They supply quite a few upholstering tools and supplies.

Well, if you really only have to replace a few then the little kit available in most chandlers for 10-15 quid gives you what will get the job done. Just check which studs etc you are buying..some are for screwing onto the Grp, the others for the canvas.
You do need to be a bit careful with the hammer or the pin splays out in a mess...As JFM says, it is a bit rubbish and it is the kind of tool you think..this really isn't very good..you might waste a few of the buttons but in honesty, it does the job if it just a few that need replacing cheaply. If you secure them properly, they do then stay fixed.
Incidentally, smear a very small amount of vaseline on the male side of the button..should help a bit with the popping on and off.
Before you start to fix them though, do have a look at the state of the canvas itself. You might find it is a good time for a bit of extra strengthening around the button.
