Loving my new Galaxy Tab for mobile use but cant for the life of me work out how to search threads on this forum...because the search box is in a pull down, when Android opens up the keyboard it switches focus back to the browser because the pull down closes...any ideas?

Ignore that...just found the option at the bottom of the website to change the format to mobile, so I'm a happy bunny again.

found the Opera browser to be better and quicker than the built in one on the android system. free download.

I havent tried any other browsers on the Galaxy yet but just found this poll result which seems to rate Firefox and Opera both of which I am familiar with and along Dolphin which I've never hear of and the rather aptly named Boat browser as runner up.

I'll give these a go and see how they fare against one another. However my experience so far of Opera (admittedly only on small screen Android/Nokia/Sony/Nintendo devices) is that its pretty basic and doesnt like plug ins much. Since the Galaxy Tab has a sizeable 10 inch screen I was looking for a full featured experience like my desktop, the bundled Chrome is pretty damn good except for the handling of drop down menus which is preventing me using a number of websites I visit regularly.

Firefox 10.4% (1,338 votes)

Chrome 38.35% (4,935 votes)

Dolphin HD/Mini 25.29% (3,254 votes)

Boat Browser/Mini 2.2% (283 votes)

Opera Mobile/Mini 23.76% (3,057 votes)

Just tried on the HTC Phone and Galaxy10.1 tablet and search worked for me on both using the standard Android browser
Not sure why not working for you

It works fine on my HTC too, so it must be down to the specific browser version on the Galaxy Tab 2, I'm not 100% which browser it is but suspect its Chrome, whatever it is its the default one from the Jellybean installation it came with. I have found some other quirks too - for example its not possible to select text and copy and paste it to other documents or even save images from the web so will definitely be trying some other browsers.

Okay, just for interest I tried Chrome, Firefox and Opera browers last night and the results were not good. In all cases I started by forcing the YBW forums to display in full web format ( IE NOT the mobile version) , this was to test how the browsers would react to pull down menus and th esearch tools and how the sites would render. result: NONE of them worked properly / consistently and even after switching back to mobile mode they were very poor performance in terms of speed and rendering compared to the default browser. All of them stayed resident and activer after closing so chewed up resources unnecessarily too.

In conclusion it was interesting to find that the default Android browser is the best of this sorry bunch, but there's no branding on it so I'm not 100% which core its running but it does look very like a version of Chrome in terms of tab layout etc. but whatever it is it has clearly been recompiled to optimum for this version of Android.

Ive now uninstalled the others as they bring nothing to the party.

Here is a screenshot taken on my phone (Orange San Francisco). It shows the result of touching a "pull-down" box and it easy to select a menu item. Of course on my small screen it's necessary to zoom in and pan first.

The screen is 3.5", the browser is Opera Mini and the forum is in the normal mode (not mobile).

Maybe this is device related rather than browser?

Regards,

John.

Does it tell you which posts you have read yet?

No, it's rather basic.
