AFAIK you should be able to remove the gear case at the joint shown in your last picture.

It appears that there only two studs and nut to undo.

Exploded diagrams at http://www.boats.net/parts/search/Merc/Mercury/1985/parts.html may help.

Very possibly the drive shaft is rusted into the crankshaft at the top. May be possible to get some release oil to the right spot if the engine is turned upside down other wise just more force .

Not sure how the shift rod separates. Looks to be one piece so will either pull from the gear box or more likely from the shift lever mechanism at the top.
Water tube will pull from the pump I expect

Maybe some helpful info at http://boatinfo.no/lib/library.html#

I would say there is a lot of corrosion where the studs go throught the cast alloy, or you haven't undone one of the nuts. If all the nus are undone i would suggest that you get a blow torch and heat the casings and use some persuasion like some hardwood wedges to separate the castings

On my 8hp removing the bottom of the leg is reasonably easy. Disconnect the gear
rod at the top, remove the anti lift lock. Undo the three bolts by the anticavitation. Plate and separate.
The drive shaft pulls out from the engine block and comes out with the gear box.

The impeller housing is then on the top.

If you need a diagram private mail me.
