CANPA Hatch

I have an old CANPA hatch on my boat, but I do not have the precise dimensions. The support arm is about to fail I think.

Does anybody know if there are any spare parts around?

Also, I cannot get to the boat to measure it, so does anybody know if the modern Lewmar etc 500mm hatches are likely to be close enough to what I remember as being about a 19" hatch?

Thanks in advance

PS no diesel cylinder bores here I hope

Oh! Yes there is!! But I don't know anything about CANPA hatches!! Or some would say diesels either!! Merry crimbo to ya!

Have just replaced one on my aged Vancouver 27 - I think I still have the old hatch so I'll get you the measurements Boxing Day. I'll also check whether the stay is still useable as I changed it because of crazing of the perspex.

I replaced it with a Lewmar hatch; I think it was 600mm square and I had to fill in the boltholes left by the Canpa hatch - again I'll measure up Boxing Day.

Thanks, I look forward to hearing from you. My hatch has not crazed, so there could be a deal in the offing?

Cheers, Bernard

PS To the diesel bores:
I am reliably informed that in the late 70's early 80's the fisherman from the Lizard pennisular regularly left their YSB12 yanmars running all day, most of the time on idel without any glazed bore problems.

Any betting on what vitriol that can generate?

The CANPA hatch I replaced is 600mm square measured over the flange that sits on the deck.

The stay is made up of a rod with holes that is bolted to one side of the opening hatch and a slightly cranked stay attached to the rod with a black plastic sleeve that slides up and down the rod. A spring-loaded plunger locates into one of the holes in the rod to lock a position.

If this sounds as though it would be of use, PM me with your address and I'll send it to you. Just drop some money in the RLNI box to cover the postage.

Hatch replacement

It is possible to re-glaze Lewmar and, probably, Canpa hatches for very much less than their replacement cost.

Reglazing my 600mm Lewmar Supahatch is costing £140 including the moulding and sealant as well as the 9mm acrylic cut to size.

If I'd bought the acrylic alone it would have cost €54 - but it was only available in dark bronze in the S of France and the moulding would have cost a further £37.
