Anyone know someone reliable who could look at making some alterations to my tonneau and/or canopy? Its only a couple of years old but badly made by a firm on the East coast. I've tried a guy called 'Josh' (Cardiff) but he's yet to turn up despite several messages and a couple of conversations. Boat is in Penarth.
Thanks

What exactly is wrong with it.

I am an amatuer but made my own sail cover with a heavy duty 1960's sewing machine. If you have time and patience you could probably tackle it your self.

Lots of stuff on Utube on canvas, particularly by Sailrite.

Wow. Didn't know Caroline was still going (meant in a nice way). She made the canopy on our first boat many years ago, made a really nice job of it. She used to have a place in Sharpness?
Edited.............
Ah - confused Caroline with someone else - she doesn't cover Cardiff and the size of the tonneau would be too big for her. So who did have the place in Sharpness???
Sounds just the job for Caroline at Hotwells Canvas. 07971 727959.

Try Keith at Emlyn Canvas 01633 686308. He's made a tonneau cover for the flybridge of out Princess 33 and a camper cover for out 25' Sea Ray. I'm really pleased with both of them.

Been trying to get him down there since December ;-)

I do have to admit to a similar experience (or sequence of experiences). His quality of work is excellent but delivery can be very slow. I moved all my sailmaking/canvas business to Sanders Sails in Lymington, whose quality is even better and turnaround fantastic- one of the very best marine businesses in the country imho. Bit far to go for a tweak to a tonneau cover though.

I'd heard the quality is good which may well be linked to why he hasn't appeared - I wondered if the job was too small for him (but if so I'd wish he'd say). It will lead to a lot more work when we have the whole lot replaced in the next year or so. I'll keep on looking - thanks bitbaltic....

If your based in Penarth and are in no immediate hurry I would be prepared to work around josh in Cardiff. He's just replaced my cockpit canopy since having it removed, cleaned and stored over winter and so far I have nothing but praise for the guy. I have see. His work all over the marina in penarth and its of high quality and I haven't heard of many complaints other than the time sometimes. But as said earlier this is an extremely busy time and most sailmakers will be trying to satisfy most customers. Given the quality of his work , his costs and location. I Would wait a little longer and talk to him again as when he will be able to do your work.

I doubt its too small, but he will be up to his eyes with regu;lar customers at this time of year and making good someone else's poor work is a potential nightmare. He made an excellent sprayhood for me but didnt want to know about altering the cockpit tent that someone else had made badly. His view seemed to be that it should be replaced to get the job done right.

Despite being in Cardiff, his prices arent much different to the big south coast sail lofts

May well do that. Four months is getting a bit much now though but I do want it done properly (and I'm flexible on whatever the solution is). Sadly all of the covers and upholstery were commissioned by boats.co.uk and the quality of both is not as good as the original so all will be redone in reasonably short order. Thanks.

I have no personal experience of dealing with Boats.co.uk (previously EBY?), but their reputation for customer service is excellent. Have you called them to see what they will do for you?
