I much preferred Lanzo to Tenerife as it was cleaner, but still wanted a bit of livelyhood. For you i'd prob recommend Gran Canaria as it's quieter and cleaner again than Lanzo
I have been to them all apart from El Hierro, in my opinion the best has got to be La Palma, its the least touristy, lots of Germans go for the fantastic walking in the mountains and ravines, but very few Brits as flights are not easy or cheap. Most menus are in German or Spanish, so a little Spanish helps, bur English is now spoken widely. Very friendly peeps see you as a visitor and not a mobile wallet!
I'v been to them all and assuming you go to the main touresty bits then. Tenerife - concrete jungle. Fuertoventura - very windy, desert like, not much to do. Lanzarote - the nicest/classiest but windy. Gran Canaria - best weather, especially in the south @ Puerto Rico / Mogan. We always go to Gran Canaria in the winter now, but would choose Lanzarote in the summer. Sweeping generalisations, but it's IMHO. All the islands have nice parts (except Fuerteventura) so with some research you should get what you want. Gran Canaria also has Las Palmas if you want to be around boats! Best of luck. For research I use Googleearth to see the area and the accomodation plus Holidays Uncovered to get the truth about the hotels. be warned, the Canary's are expensive now with exchange rate i.e. £2.50 for a very small loaf, £4 for a packet of cheese etc....... Wine is more expensive than Tesco's - by a long way. e.g. Bottle of Spanish wine (Torres) at £12 is £5.50 in Tesco's! In the winter we need decent weather and the Canary's is about the nearest you will get it. In the summer - I think it's not worth visiting the islands as there is better/cheaper on our doorstep i.e. 2 hour flight away.
Very good friend of mine has a place in Los Gigantes (Tenerife).
Depends what you like.
Its very English - not unlike Duquessa.
SWMBO and I found plenty to do when we went there about 5 years ago.
Good restaurants - far away from the roudy beach centres as well.
Have been visiting the islands for the best part of 30 years and have found them all to be worth a visit, from the very laid back say on La Gomera to the lively .....Sta Cruz de Tenerife on new years eve.
A bit more detail as to what you want from a break would help, but virtually all the islands will have somewhere on them a remnant of the old fashioned spanish way of life with decent restuarants ie. (this means no pictures of the food on a board outside) etc .
Of all the islands,Tenerife is the most diverse and I would say probably the most interesting due its having a mixture of the culture of all the other islands.
Due to the fact one tiny enclave is "Birmingham-on-Sea",Tenerife has aquired a certain reputation, usually from people who have never been there.
So for me it would be Tenerife and probably in the north somewhere say Puerto de la Cruz very cosmopolitan for your evening parade but jump in the car and explore Las Canadas and the volcano during the day.
And as you very well know the spanish are football mad(inter island rivalry is deadly) and the spanish kids eat when mum and dad and abuela eats and etc etc so avoiding them may be a tad difficult. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Was working in Tennerife last year and found the North of the Island to be better than the South much greener and less Brits on the Pss than the Southern Blackpool type resorts
Teaching a guy from there at the moment .

My father in law lived in Los Gigantes and helped run the local English speaking radio station. It's not bad there but as it's built on the side of a hill some of the roads are a tad steep. Good exercise though!!
