we went from amsterdam to marseille and had a wonderful time on the canals -lots of little marinas tucked in little villages (cost next to nothing) lots of decent restaurants etc.
We came back last year -up the rhone etc. and then up the Mosel -french mosel was charming and luxembourg was nice (well it has a nice marina in the vinyards)
THEN WE GOT TO GERMANY very few places to stop ,and one has sometimes to stop illegaly because there are no other choices .the german boat that we accompanied for some time was very heavily fined by police for illegal mooring.
we did manage to moor at Cochem after going aground severely by their quay.
This was the only time in the whole journey that we seriously went aground ,suprising really because we are 1.8M deep.Very few places to fuel. The one exception was Koblenz which has excellent yacht clubs .went down the Rhine
could not get into the marina at Koln (water was too shallow) could not get into marina at Dusseldorf for same reason parked up overnight illegaly outside
Dusseldorf with BIG barges going within a few metres of us all night.next day down to Dortmund and thankfully turned up Dortmund ems canal through enormous lock and into tranquility (after the Rhine) we motored from dortmund east as we were heading for the baltic thru Munster, Hannover This is propobally the most boring journey known to man. enormous canals with about one ,enormous lock per day .only goes near a couple of villages so stocking up was difficult and you have to live on pig.definitely no live aboards .very difficult to obtain fuel (we did at one place have to fill in a form exconerating the owner from any liability from spilt fuel before they would sell any)
we came into the ELbe just S of Hamburg the took the small and pretty canal Launberg-Lubeck. I have never been so glad to get into sea before.

well of course ,We are living in Gothenburg just now .
one of the best areas, and the busiest in july, is the coast line north of gothenburg up to the norwegian border ,quite a few thousand islands (and rocks ) fishing harbours deep water and no tides.
or for a complete contrast the danish islands , little belt ,stora belt and the sound past copenhagen .
if you are heading this way or want more info . get us on sy_quandary@hotmail.com

Ashley - For background reading you might like to get a copy of a book by Gryff Rees Jones called 'To the Baltic with Bob'. A most entertaining read and some useful stuff about passages, Customs and harbours etc. As I remember it he took a couple or more seasons to do the journey.

We went to the Baltic this year. PM me and I can help a bit with the German/Danish bits. Do it, it's a wonderful area for cruising.

We did a couple of days in the Dutch canals, but not in Germany. The rest of the route to and from the UK was outside the Fresian islands and the Kiel Canal.

Baltic

Can also recommend "To the baltic with Bob"

If you are venturing to the eastern end of the Baltic, try contacting Nigel Luther, who posts on Scuttlebutt. He is based in Estonia, and can help with info.
We spent a fabulous two weeks this year on a friend's boat sailing from Helsinki to Riga, and can certainly recommend that area for low cost, uncrowded and pleasurable sailing.
